  • Why do some Soloists have abalone inlays and logo?

Mods, I didn't put this in E-Fraid because it's not an E-Bay issue.

I saw a used SL2H in my local Guitar Center a couple of years ago, and it had abalone sharkies and logo, like this one:

I always regretted not grabbing it when I could have. Let me add that it did NOT say Custom Shop on it like this one does.

But why do some have this? Don't they typically have mother of pearl?

Its a Custom USA Select. Its like a custom shop, only with limits as to what you can have.

Every now and again one appears - maybe they were just running low of MoP on that day, maybe it was destined to be something 'special' but something got screwed up. Maybe they just liked to change it up once in a while LOL

Also, just because it doesn't say custom shop doesn't mean it isn't one. Best way to tell is by serial number.

Does it have 25 frets? I know someone was looking for an extra one.

Yeah. To this day I regret not grabbing that one in GC. If I remember correctly, it was very plain otherwise, I think solid black with no graphic.

I've never seen the custom shop logo like that. Front and center to be sure.

On the other hand, I've seen Custom Shop on the headstock with a U serial. It was a guitar where there were no woodworking changes.

Yeah, this one is a bit different. Toggle switch and jumbo frets. I hate those medium frets KVs usually come with.

Slight problem there, chief: the Custom Select was only started recently, he said the guitar he saw was a couple of years ago.

I have seen drastic variations in MOP where it looked like abalone. I seem to recall owning such a guitar several years ago (couldn't find a pic or recall what guitar it was to save my life ) but it was spec'd with MOP, except that it was dark and highly figured. Comparing the inlays directly to abalone, you could see the difference, but looking at it alongside the more milky MOP, you'd swear it was abalone.
I wanna say it was the archtop Soloist I got from Hellraiser. It's in France now, IIRC. J6147?

If I remember correctly, this one was just as bold as the one above. I've seen the variations you're talking about but I'm about 99% convinced that it was abalone.

Man, I wish I had bought it!

I have a SL2H with abalone logo and fretboard inlays and green ghost flame finish. It has a production serial number but it could have been a limited run for MF.
No honey, I have always had this Jackson....

Wow. Just wow. That sounds like one awesome looking guitar. Do you have any pics?
