potential trade...DM strat for RR1

Hi All,

New member here with a potential trade lined up: my 2014 Dave Murray strat for a 2007 RR1.

My dilemma is that I already have a '84 student model Rhoads...so is there enough difference in a newer RR to justify having two so similar guitars (albeit the main similarities are the body shape and neck profile...pretty much everything else with the RR1 would be considered an upgrade).

Going to check it out tomorrow but I'm pretty much on the fence at this point. Any advice or things I should be looking for?

Make sure the headstock clearcoat is OK. Tradewise, if they're both in similar condition, I'd say it was fairly even - maybe the DM is worth a tad more, depending on the finish / graphic on the RR1.

There's lots of RR1's out there, not so many Murray strats. I'd keep the strat, even though I don't even like strats! Hey, it's Dave Murray's classic tool of choice!

Thanks all for the input. I ended up going and checking out the RR1 and the deal didn't end up going through anyway. But...I did learn that there is pretty significant difference between the neck on my '84 Rhoads student model and the newer RR1's. Let's just say I fell hard for it, it just felt sooo..right. It was a long ride home so I decided to see for giggles what GC would give me for the DM. I estimated high at $1K but they offered $900 and 10% towards a new RR1. I couldn't let it go for that little so I left but started thinking, man, I really liked the RR1 more than my Rhoads so I decided to throw it on ebay and see what happens (check it out and let me know what you think). If it sells, then I'll probably sell the DM too and just buy a new RR1. I think I'm having a mid-life crisis...but with guitars instead of cars

I dunno, man. The Murray is more 'unique', but you only live once. Get rid of it if you're thinking about swapping it all too often.

Yep. I'm not promoting that he trade, not trade, or go have an ice cream cone. But OP, if you just can't stop thinking about the RR!, you won't be satisfied until you get one.

I had a similar story with two guitars.

I bought an LP Custom. Had a few opportunities to trade it off as I didn't gel with it. Decided to closet it instead. End result, got it refretted one day with jumbos. I am now unable to be separated from it.

I also had the original Iron Maiden Fender Strat. I didn't like that it wasn't a recessed floyd. I sold it. I will never regret anything more...

I would also keep the DM. You already have a RR as well

Update, well, the Rhoads is up for auction and will be gone by next week. I'm going to miss it as it was a bad-ass guitar and cool because the vintage vibe and it had such an early number. I've since put of the DM strat on ebay and reverb for the minimum amount I'll her go for. If both sell, I'm going for a new RR1. If just the Rhoads goes, then I'll save up a little and go used RR1.

If you join the classifieds here you might be able to sell both for a pretty good buck. Good luck with your sales and new purchase.
