  • New arrival - old school PC1

I've had a couple of PC1s through the years but for whatever reason, never really bonded with them. I had a 2008 or so in Mocha which had sustainer issues and just sounded shitty to me, and then I got an early koa body in Chlorine which I liked a lot more, but had too good an offer to justify keeping. But then I saw Brooks had listed one of his, with what is pretty much my ideal top (I'm a sucker for that wide quilt!) and I decided to dip my toes back in the silly electronics / massive neck guitar pond!

We talked out a price and fortunately a joint friend was calling to visit him, so I got to save some shipping costs. There's not much else to say, it's 'just' an early 2 knob PC1, probably koa, but definitely a quilt board. Neither Brooks, Vik or myself are 100% on the koa, but if I had to bet, I'd say it is - there's just too much going on for mahogany. It's in awesome shape for a guitar which is 17 years old (according to the serial listing on the Jackson site).

Anyway, here's some pics - not ragging on Jackson here, but they just don't seem to come with tops this nice any more:

And just a cheeky one with my 2011 custom-sorta-PC1:

Big thanks to Brooks and Vik for getting this to me!

    That looks stunning!!!

Glad you like it and happy to help out with the transport too!

Of course you do understand that without 13-56 strings it will play and sound like rubbish? LOL!

Seriously though, I would toss some tasty FU-Tone TI bits all over that one.

Congrats on the new PC1! It looks awesome (as does the custom root beer PC1/AS).

Definitely koa, and love everything about those early PC1s. They don't make them like they used to, most especially the quality of the tops and staining. Pretty much gotta go full custom shop to get that quality appearance now, they've downgraded most of the production guitars to a lesser standard.

          Congrats.

                Love the older PC1 necks.
I still regret getting rid of this one.

(PC3 body with an early PC1 neck)

I agree with the OP on Jackson's tops. Frankly, I think Jackson is ripping people off now. Their tops are essentially paper thin laminates. Not even a mere 1/4" tops at this point. Not to mention they're almost always "meh" now. You absolutely don't see them sending out axes with tops like yours anymore, unless a big premium is paid.

In fairness, they tops weren't 1/4" even back then - they've been 1/8" since the start, and that's been the standard on all USA Select guitars (apart from the SLATs). If you want a deeper top, that's custom order..
