    Surprise NGD: Rhoads banjo relic

    Wow, I wasn't expecting this one.
    Bid on this and no one else did. I am guessing it was the crappy pics and lack of description but I liked what I saw...a well played custom RR with top mount.
    I knew it was a bit rough but the real surprise when I opened the case was the tiny frets. I measured them and they appear to be small or banjo frets, .078 wide .041 tall. The neck is nice a straight, I pulled apart the JT-6 and cleaned/lubed everything gave it a quick setup and damn this thing sings. For picking/scales this plays and sounds awesome. All of my other guitars are jumbo or medium frets so this was a real departure from what I am used to and I like it. I was thinking about having it refinished but the more I look at it and play it the more I like the relic'd look that some pay extra to replicate. The pinstripes peel off easy and I was thinking of taking them off but they give it definition that I like. Planning to replace the EMG with something more original. It has a J50N in the neck, can anyone speculate what the original bridge pickup was? Anyway, enough of my blathering...pics or it didn't happen!

    Looks cool, I'd just throw a covered J90C in there. Jackson is remarkably consistent with those Sanko jumbo frets over the years, so it's probably a refret. With a binding it's hard to tell. At least they are reasonably tall, a lot of the vintage ones with jumbos are worn down that far anyways. The JT6: play it loud, play it proud!

      A quick email to Dave at www.fretsonthenet.com will get you some oversize pickup conversion rings and some better quality JT6 posts (and inserts if you want to pull them too)..

        Doubt it's a refret as the fret wear looks consistent with the guitar wear. Heavy wear up on 123 E&A so she was a chugger. I am probably going to take it to see if can be be recrowned. If not it might be candidate for a refret.
        I think I will just look for a covered J90C.

            IIRC the PCS Rhoads had tall skinnies, as did the JCF01 Rhoads, because that's what was on Randy's black V.


            The original bridge pickup may have been a J80C or J90C.

              Yeah, I've seen several from that era with those frets.

                These are short skinnies, only .041 tall.
                I have ordered a J90C from 1989 for the bridge.
                What sort of volume pot should I use for that?

                Oh I forgot to mention this is a 1988.

                    Frets are original....most 80s Rhoads had small frets unless otherwise specified by the customer

                        Many of the Custom Rhoads from 1988 to about 1990 had those skinny frets. Those appear original.

                            J90-C plus gold OFR/tuners installed.
                            I was planning to get a brass cavity cover and switch to black knobs.
                            Will that look ok?
