  • SL2H a veneer top or a 1/8" drop top ?

i wonder hows the workmanship on an american made jackson ? is a sl2h flame or quilt top a veneer sheet or real 1/8" drop top ?

am pulling out a purchase soon on an regular SL2H select or a CS SL2hQ... because of my previous experience on an SL2H usa made its gotta fillers found on the wood inside the pickup cavity and because of its thick lacquer am afraid its tone wouldnt be as natural as other boutique guitars...

did any of soloist users find fillers inside their pickup cavities ?

I think my former 2005 SL2H had a veneer top, I definitely didn't see a seam inside pickup cavities. It was a nice veneer though, quite lively - as in the flame pattern changed depending on the view angle. Overall it was a shoddy piece of work. Finish was quite thick, yes, but that was the least of my problems with it :>

Can't remember if there was any filler inside pickup cavities, but I believe they had used up the day's quota on gluing inlays to the fretboard.

Here's one. 1/8 inch top. Not mine.

USA Select production guitars (alder body with maple neck) with flame tops have a thin veneer. Mahogany body/neck versions (SL2HQ-MAH) have a 1/8th top. All Custom Select guitars - flame or quilt - have a 1/8th top.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is about the veneers. On a neck-through guitar with an alder body / maple neck design, I WANT to hear more of the alder (than maple), so the tone isn't too bright.

You're actually going to hear more of the maple anyway since the neck is maple and the pickups are mounted right over the neck.

Yep, exactly my point, Toe. A thicker top would just be adding even more maple into that tone equation. So I'd rather it just be a thin veneer with that design.

i have no idea... but i guess it sounds kinda hard to tell the difference with all that and the thick finishing that jackson have over...

am trying to do a maple neck with maghogany wings and 1/8" flame or quilted, no inlays, reverse headstock, and a nice transblack finishing... hardtail thou... i need a sexy flame or quilt ala the same grade where tom andersons are using on their drop top...

Lose the hardtail (TOM instead), and you could go as a custom select. Otherwise, prepare to bend over for the Masterbuilt fee.

Here's a Custom Select Soloist I used to own. 1/8th top, 5a grade. It was a nice guitar.

Interesting. I thought all USA had 1/8 tops and only the MIJ had veneer... Guess I haven't owned enough USA Selects. lol

String height on a TOM is similar to a non-recessed Floyd. Nothing to be worried about.
