  • Photoshoot day: 1998 Jackson SHS1 Shannon Soloist

Over the past decade or so, you've seen me post a few different photoshoots of this guitar. The most recent one is here: http://www.jcfonline.com/threads/149...-family-photos

Until warmer weather allows me to shoot properly outdoors, the below photos will suffice. Sorry for all the Shannon Soloist post/topics on the Jackson USA Guitars subforum lately, since I'm a big part of the volume of posts. Since the same questions keep being asked, I've been contemplating building a centralized Shannon Soloist information page/website if there is enough interest, and these pics would get me started if I decided to initiate this endeavor.

Photos of the binding nibs won't be repeated but can be found in a supplementary post here: http://www.jcfonline.com/threads/151...=1#post1656919

For those wondering about specs: http://www.jcfonline.com/threads/239...l=1#post276513.

Mine is stock, except I installed a big brass block from FU-TONE (back when they were known as FloydUpgrades), and the original Duncan SSL-5 and Pearly Gates pickups have been replaced by a previous owner with Duncan Hot Rails and DiMarzio Super 3, but I replaced those with APC 200 singles and APC Persuader Lead humbucker. To hear how the bridge pickup sounds: http://www.jcfonline.com/threads/150...=1#post1651898

Top mount Floyds just play so much better to me. I have no idea why Jackson stuck such crappy pickups in those Shannon models from the factory. I'd love to have one of the blue ghost flame models.

Indeed, it's an odd selection. Targeting the classic rock sound?

      SSL-5 = David Gilmour

      Pearly Gates = Billy Gibbons

Though I'm curious about how they sound, I'm not sure of the thinking behind these pickups. The SSL-5 is 13K Ohm resistance but the Pearly Gates is in the ballpark of 8K Ohms. Not that resistance directly translates to output, but strange.

Since that finish is the most common, that's probably anyone's best chance at coming across one! I wouldn't mind another Shannon of any color though.

Agreed. I love the comfort. Gotta love the dramatic 4° neck angle required by a Floyd that sits that high. My two Charvel So-Cals have non-recessed Floyds but have a straight neck angle, so the Floyd hovers closer to the body than on the Shannon, limiting pull-up ability. I can really pull up dramatically on the Shannon before the bridge hits the body.

        She's in great shape.

              Love that Soloist.
I have a set of APC's in my main Dinky Rev Pro.
My quietest and most reliable guitar for tone.
I got the Malice in the neck and Persuader Lead Custom. in the bridge. Got them on a 5 way on 250K pots and a Creation Audio Labs, Redeemer Circuit.
I still have a couple 300 Singles and a Prototype single he called "Legend". I never installed the Prototype because I am waiting for the right guitar to install that one in.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

I have a couple Shannon Soloists myself. They're great guitars well, except for that weak Pearly Gates in the bridge. The reason that pickup was used was because at the time Donny Wade, a then manager at Jackson, wanted it in there. It was not Mike Shannon's choice.

The Pearly Gates is actually good, if you have a high gain amp. They have a nice percussive tone. For old Plexi's and such, definitely too weak, to do any damage.

This guitar deserved a proper outdoor photoshoot on a cloudy day. So that's what I did.
