I might be reading that wrong, but to clarify, they were using the J and RR serials from the get-go..
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I live in Mlps. also and that price $2250 he's out of his mind. Tell him to put the pipe away and step away from the guitar. A Jackson with a Kahler should be max.$1000 or less even an 80's .

RR and J have been used since 1983. When U (for USA?) was introduced in 1990 the Soloist and RR were production models that had a U serial. Custom shop RR were still RR and other customs neck thru models were J.

$2250 is a crack-pipe-dream. No way. The market is very soft... and lots of inventory sitting around.

Though, in keeping with their inconsistent history, there're CS logo'd models out there with Uxxxxx serials.
...oftentimes simply because of a custom graphic.
I'm getting a bit off topic for the present scenario, though.
            96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.
