  • Jackson Soloist Question.

Take a look at the pic. Were all SL1 or SL2's that looked like that...were they all the MAH models? Meaning Mahoganey bodied? Were there some like that which came in Alder but with that natural flamed top? I don't have an exact pic of the guitar I'm asking about but it looks a bit like that, it's an SL1, and it WAS for sale at a killer price, even if it is ALder.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure they made natural topped guitars with alder bodies..
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I guess a serial number lookup is the only way to really check it right?

That won't do you much good because the serials aren't published since FMIC took over, and even if they were, it'd just tell you the year, not the work order / specs..

There is one hint that it could be a mahogany body. In 2003 many soloists with mahogany body had "q-parts" knobs. The picture looks as if this guitars has q-parts knobs.

Could be either. Get a pic of the back if you can, that's the only way to say for sure.

Check out page 9 of 27 of this 2003 Jackson catalog. It shows a transparent blue SL1 with a flame maple top and a transparent red SL2H with a flame maple top. These trans-finished, maple-topped Soloists had alder bodies by default.

Mahogany bodies were a separate model designation for the SL2H called the SL2H-MAH. To my recollection, the SL1 never came with a mahogany variant. So the SL1 that got away from you at a good price would just be alder-bodied.

Seems like a simple idea, but I've had it work before. Get the actual serial number so you can google it. It may have been listed at one point with it's original specs.

No, I am the one who bought it. It's an SL1 with a top that looks like the one in that pic. I don't have it yet but I figured I'd give it a shot for $1,100.

Oh! I see what you mean now. Congrats! Did you buy it without seeing photos of it?

When you receive the guitar, or if the seller did share pics with you, please do share photos of the back, as shreddermon suggested. Mahogany and alder have very different grain patterns and they are very easy to tell apart.

If you snagged the one on Guitar Centers website, congrats. I had my eye on it as well. Looked great and the price was very reasonable.
