  • Soloist/Dinky Owners Opinions

We know the bodies are the same outline, so I thought today to compare the thickness of each.
    And, oh oh.

My USA Soloist is approximately 1/8" to 3/16ths inch thicker than my archtop MIJ Dinky and at least 3/16ths thicker
    than my JS3 Indian bass.

I'm comparing a bass and an archtop import with a flat top USA neck thru...very different.
What results are you guys getting on certain models?

Is a DK1 thinner that an SL1/2, for example? Imports differ from USA?
    God, I hope not.

Not necessarily, especially with an archtop, thickness can vary due to finishing. Some maybe thicker than others.
They all start out with a thick maple cap 1/4 - 3/8, I will check this out further. I'll measure my DK1 vs My Professionals
    and get back to ya.

Readings given from precision calipers were all over the map. From as little as 1.71" to as high as 1.9" for import Dinkys. My USA Soloist is around 1.8", so obviously the Dinky isn't thinner.

1.75"-1.85" seemed to be the average from the numbers offered.

My archtop Dinky is thinner around most of the body's edge, but the horns and thickest part of the arch are in the 1.75"-1.80" range.

You now have express permission to acquire yourself a DK1 for flattop-to-flattop comparison to your SL2HT.

The only thing stopping me from currently having either a Lightning Sky or Pavo Purple DK1 is a weirdo in Alberta and a weirdo in Quebec.

          I had cash in hand.

While I haven't measured anything, my DKMG did not fit in the case that came with my DR3. There was a significant difference. Both of which were different than my Soloist.

I'll measure my custom Dinky just for shits and giggles, because the body shape isn't exactly Soloist and isn't exactly 22 fret Dinky even though that's what it is.

              1 13/16ths or about 46mm.

46mm is 1.81 inches, so that'd be among the average.

The DKMG is bigger than a DR3? Wouldn't have expected that.

Dude, I wish that was true. But compare ebay in Canada to ebay in the US and you'll get a rude shock LOL
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I'd ballpark the number of USA Jacksons on Canada's largest classified site, kijiji, to be 20. And 80%+ are in Quebec and Ontario.

There's one SL2HT in Nova Scotia. Been here for around 5 years. That's my favorite model, and they don't show up often.
He's advertised on Reverb and across Canada on kijiji.
I tried years ago on at least 2 occasions to get it, but he made a fool of me.
I have a hate for that prick that I can't put into words.
He's playin' games. The guitar would've been sold long ago if he wanted to sell it.

The Pavo was in Alberta and the guy wanted the money before he shipped. I said no. I had zero protection, but the guy was over the moon worried about HIS risk. I said send it COD and I'll email the shipping charges in good faith. Wasn't good enough.
COD has been used for decades and he acted like he'd never heard of it.
My only USA was paid for by COD.

The Lightning was in Quebec and owned by a non-English speaker. I had many questions and don't speak French, so I asked if he knew someone that could translate for us?
That must've been an insult, because he never got back...or something...can't remember. Just backs up the endless stories of how nasty Quebecer's can be. 'Ignorant pricks' is the common term....actually, that's the only one fit to print here.

Getting off topic here, but what looks like a 90s USA Soloist (with Schaller JT590 trem and some sort of faded coral sea graphic?) just appeared on Ottawa Kijiji this morning for CAD$1500. I've asked the seller for more photos and details, specifically what he means by "grooved frets". Could mean a scalloped fretboard, though it likely means there is considerable fret wear.

One lousy picture and nearly nonexistent description for a high-ticket item. Some people's kids.

Visit Kijiji Classifieds to buy, sell, or trade almost anything! New and used items, cars, real estate, jobs, services, vacation rentals and more virtually anywhere.

I saw that this morning and was actually going to post it on a forum titled ' How NOT to advertise a guitar.

If they can't bother with little details like making proper pictures to inspect the item, how can you trust them to ship it properly?
And if it arrives in one piece..how many scratches will it have? Lol.

I was so anxious to get a SL2HT, and was so surprised I found one in my part of the world, I got the guy to send it COD based only on a pic almost exactly as the one in the ad.

I opened the package at the post office so that I'd have witnesses and found a guitar so full of fingerprints I couldn't immediately tell if it was dirty or scratched to hell.

It cleaned up nicely...aside from a couple tiny cracks in the ebony.

Moral is: don't roll the dice on $1000+ unless you're rich.
