I bought a Charvel Model 1 with that pickup once. My take is that it sounded good but it was really weak.

the J90c was the hot pickup in the 80's. I just picked one up to drop in mt dst.. My 1c has the j90c and my 475 has the j50 with the active boost deal, hands down I like the J90 better.
A few Charvels, a bunch of Jacksons, JVM full stack, valve king half stack and an 4000 watt PA for a home stereo, my neighbors love me....

I think your pickup must have been broken or wired incorrectly, or the height set too low. The J90 is a hot pickup, even by today's standards.

Really? I've heard otherwise all over the place, and especially on this forum.

I commented based on the particular pickups I've actual heard. I did a little bit more research on here and apparently there can be significant differences in individual pickups of the same model, especially when comparing earlier vs. later pickups. do you know when your pickup is from?

fwiw one of the only things here that gives you a notion of output is the DC resistance, and that's not always a great indicator because the output will also depend on the wire and winding geometry, magnet strength, etc.

the output level reading is also not perfect because it's only measured here at the resonance frequency. a "vintage" pickup could have a higher output at its resonance frequency because it's voiced brighter. a hot pickup is generally more balanced or darker and will have a subdued resonance peak, even though overall it's hotter. also Jackson didn't print actual units for the output level; dB is a just a relative measure.

Okay, maybe mine was a J90 without the "C" designation.

Either way, it was good sounding but not very high output.

                          Thanks everyone
this pickup is amazing with a characteristic
sound and I have a lot of them from bare knuckles to
                          custom boutique.
The Q is that every J90c has only flat sqrews ??

The J90C ( ceramic magnets ) is a good-to-mediocre pickup some are wound hotter than others between 10-12ohms.. the J90 ( no-C ) has Alnico magnets and is in the 18ohms range very hot but useful. The USA made Jackson J80 is my favorite pickup ( maybe of all time ).. comes in around 13ohms. awesome buttery distortion!!

J95 was the hottest Jackson put out, J90c was right below it. I have a Model2 with a J90c and its smokin,,, my model 88 with the J95 is just a bit hotter.
