• Used USA Soloist - what is this?

OK, my brother called me last night and told me that he found a cool USA neck-through Jackson in a little hole in the wall music store up the street from me. It sounded like an SL-1 in EDS from what he described and he said the guy was asking $699 with a case. So this morning I take a ride up there and there it is - It looks to me like it is an early nineties "USA Soloist", the one with the Jackson pickups and Schaller trem. It's a 24 fret neck through, s-s-h pickup config, ebony board bound with abalone sharks and "Jackson Made in USA" logo. The color looks like a darker version of EDS but is possibly that color that is the same color as EDS but without the swirl. It's got a BL pickup in the bridge. It's pretty beat up, and has lots of scratches, dings and a couple of pretty nasty quarter size chips. To show what a knucklehead the owner is/was, it's got a big old Rolling Stones "lips" sticker on the front of it. The case is beat to crap too. I did play it and it plays great and sounds good too. The frets dont look too bad and there is no major damage other than the previously mentioned "child abuse" - i.e. no headstock breaks or detectable cracks anywhere. It looks beat up but solid. A "player" as it were. Anyway, I offered the guy $550 out the door for it. He said it was on consigment and he couldn't do better than $650. I told him when he gets to $575 to give me a call . It looks like this one from the gallery, even has the exact pickups, could it be the same guitar after falling off a truck maybe?...

While I was there.....I asked if they had any other Jacksons or Charvels and the guy goes in the back and comes back with what looked like a old burgundy looking Charvel Model 3 or 4. It was in ok shape except for some pretty bad buckle rash on the back and a very broken Schaller trem - and I do mean broken as in, in multiple broken peices, lol. All of the other parts were there save 1 lockdown screw for the locking nut. I took the electronics plate off and it was all stock with the Jackson pickups and active electronics. The only thing I wasn't sure about was that it had 3 toggles instead of a 5-way blade switch but I am pretty sure it is a Model 3 or 4. Oh yeah it has a bolt-on 22 fret rosewood neck with sharks and is back-routed with pointy headstock. It looks just like this one from the gallery...

...but I thought Model 4's were neck-through, I could be wrong though. I offered the guy $200 for it as-is with a cheap aftermarket case. I told him I would be back after a while but after thinking about it, I am thinking more like $150 and I don't even really care about the crappy case. I don't think finding a bridge for it would be a big deal, as a matter of fact I have a chrome Schaller bridge but it's got black hardware. In any case, I figure around $40-50 for a used replacement bridge.

So what do you guys think?...Am I right about what these guitars are and what about the values of these? Any input appreciated. TIA -Frank

The soloist sound pretty darn rough.

Model 4s are bolt on guitars. The Schaller must be aftermarket as they came with a Jackson JT6.

If it's in good shape, $200 would be decent. $150 even better

The Soloist is pretty rough but it is a good player from what I saw.

So it's a Model 4 then. The Model 4 bridge could have been a JT-6. It's pretty busted up and I only saw it for a couple of minutes - didn't need to see much more than that to know what the deal was, hehe, "this piece used to connect to this piece but now they are two pieces....", lol. Factor in that you'll have to get another bridge for the Model 4--I certainly wouldn't pay more than $150 for it, and probably not even that much.

As far as the Soloist goes, I don't think that $650 is out of line for an early '90s model in that condition. There's certainly nothing wrong with trying to get it down a bit lower than that. I got my '93 Soloist for $550, but it had been heavily modified by a previous owner and is finished in basic black. However, mine is probably in a bit better shape than the one you are describing, even though the finish has some issues here and there.

My rule of thumb is that the shape of the finish isn't all that important, as long as the guitar itself is in good shape--especially the wood and fretwork, which are things that are very expensive to repair.

          That finish is Coral Sea.

Right, Coral Sea, thanks bud. I actually think it is EDS now that I think about it. So maybe I should go and offer the guy $600 for it then? I KNOW he will take $625 for it. My wife thinks I am crazy, hehe. She took one look at that thing with the chips and scratches and the sticker on it and said NO WAY are you paying that much for THAT guitar, lol. She's a good'n She won't let me buy crap guitars, hehe.

Coral Sea is more rare than the EDswirl.....If you want it go for it.

I bought a Soloist recently that had lots of touched up dings, a sticker on the back hiding a name scratched into the paint, and it even has a Kahler! I paid more than the asking price for this guitar. Why? Because it kicks ass. Judge what you are willing to pay by performance.

EDS with no Swirl is Coral Sea. Coral Sea was Swirled to create Eerie Dess Swirl.

I'd pass... Sounds a little too beat up for my tastes.
