• Given a choice

You are given a choice, for $815, your choice of either a 2002 USA SL1,black,no issues, or this perfect 87 Soloist Student. Which one do YOU pick? Bear in mind, its just going to be a part of my collection, not gigged or anything, just played at home.

Re: Given a choice

Damn that's a tough one. On one hand the '87 is gonna have that killer vibe to it...and I love non-recessed Floyds now due to my Shannon SL....but I'm a sucker for Ebony, binding, and fins.....
I'd say the SL1 is probably worth a little more. But it'd be a toss up...

OOOOHHHHH Man, that is a tough one! Actually, it's only a tough one because they both have a similar value. The 87 Soloist without a doubt in my mind. Vibe, broken in, probably sounds great, more versatile pup arrangement IMO, and non recessed OFR.

87.
I'll take a non-recessed floyd over a recessed any day of the week.
The 87s neck is probably going to be a bit fatter compared to the 02.
Just something else to consider.

Sorry for beeing off topic - I always wonder why do you guys prefer a non-recessed floyd? Is it just the look or does it have a special advantage?

How is that number, $815? I know its decent for the SL1, but what about the Soloist Student?

BTW, Yes, the neck is fatter, no doubt.

Thinner neck + ebony w/binding & MOP fins = my vote for the SL1

Re: Given a choice

I would play both and then make the choice.

The neck profile difference may cinch it as I tend to like to play thiner necks. However, I am also a sucker for ebony. But my '84 Roads student is rosewood and plays very well.

Another thing to think about is that if you have a number other guitars, you may want to get whichever one will fill a nitch. If you do not have one of the newer soloists, then I would say they are great guitars IMHO. If you do have a newer soloist, I would grab the '87 even if you already have one from that time as I suspect old Jacksons will start to jump in price like the Charvels did once collectors really start to go after them.

As for the price, it's great for a newer SL1, and I'd say about the top-end for an 87 Student in mint or near mint condition.

I'd take the SL1.

Ya Newc, it is a great price on the SL-1, and to be honest, I may buy both, but just getting the feeleers out.
