Re: Given a choice

2002 SL1.

For me, it is because of the pickups.
I would end up changing 3pickups from 87 and that's a lot of money.

It all depends what you prefer.
Dot inlays or sharfin inlays?
Jackson pickups or Duncans?
Recessed trem or non recessed?
5way switch or 3 mini switches?

Re: Given a choice

for me:

fret wear.

if the frets blow on the 87 i'd pass, and take the 2002 which would have lots of meat left...

but if the frets look good, 87 in a jiff.. those don't pop up EVERY day.. lol

Re: Given a choice

i would go with the 87 just so i cna have an 80s jackson in my arsenal. but if i was to go with practicality i would say the sl1 becuase of the recessed floyd and i love ebony

Re: Given a choice

If the 87 was a Soloist Custom... it would be an easy choice for me, but being a student... I don't know, I guess SL1...

Re: Given a choice

I'd probably go with the SL1, and that's mainly because of looks.

Re: Given a choice

Whats's the difference between a recessed and a non-recessed floyd?

btw, I would go for the SL1, i think it's more guitar for the money

Re: Given a choice

if it were an 86 & not an 87 easy choice. so ide choose the SL1 or buy Jim Shines pink SD soloist if its not already sold

Re: Given a choice

I bought the SL1 (third soloist) and will see if I miss the student......

When I posted this, I wasnt really needing prodding or needing someone to decide for me, I am way past the indecisive part of my life (as is evident from my collection), but it did prove a point to me, that as they say, "there is a chair for every ass".

Thanks,

Shawn

Congrats!
There will be always some used 80's soloists pop up.
I have seen many lately.

Good luck!

Re: Given a choice

Most '87 student Soloists would have a hard time bringing $815 in a common color. I would take it if it were sparkle green, orange, or something more interesting to me. As it sits I'd take the money and wait to find a better deal on one.

Re: Given a choice

i'd choose the SL-1 simply because i like a blade PU selector for fast switching in songs.

i just don't like the individual on/off switches.

Re: Given a choice

For me, definitely the old Soloist Student. I like the looks of it and I don't mind the three on/off pickup switches. You can't do super fast pickup changes with it, but if you are playing only at home, who cares? I used to gig some with a guitar with the three mini-switches and it worked OK for me.

Plus, that white guitar just looks great!
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.
