• Comparing the RR-1 and SL2H? Help Desired...

Hi there, I'm new to the boards. I was directed by Zerb with his time on the Duncan Forums.

Now, I've played the Soloists and have had my share of orgasmic moments and notes with those bad boys. BUT!! GAS is killing me and I'm itching for a Rhoads! Tell me, as I've nowhere in the near future (month?) the luxury of playing the RR, your comparisons of the two? What you like better for what and what you don't like about the other. Thanks so much!

BTW - I'm talking about the Trem versions of both.

The body shape is so different and it feels differently.
The upper strap pin is located behind of upper frets, so that also makes it different too when you use a strap.
IMO, it feels very different.
My Elbow wouldn't sit on the body of RR so it is bit hard to play.
I am a strat/dinky shape guy so RR and shape like Explorer are much harder to play.
Playable but it is bit different feel there.

Hey there!
Welcome to the JCF!

They are both fine, fine guitars!
But different monsters.
The obvious are the specs.
I like 24 frets so I dont own any RR models.
But I like them very much.
The main difference is body design and extra tone control on the Rhoads.

Both have the same spec's on the neck...
I guess its a personal preference

Best wishes!

oh! forgot to include this.
RR shape guitar only makes me to play Randy Rhoads licks.
That is a problem... at least for me.

I love the RR! I have 3 at the moment, 1 Dinky and a few Charvel Mod 4. The Dinky/Soloist body feels small to me and looks small on me to. I've never come across a guitar that hangs better on me than the RR.
I've got EMG's in my both RR-1's and Kent Armstrong/Jackson in my -84 RR. They all sounds killer!

Try it, you'll like it!

Though I'm not playing my Soloists a ton at the moment, if I were keeping only one guitar it would probably be a Soloist. The ones I have just feel right when I pick them up (lots of Jacksons just feel right to me). That said, y'all can have my San Dimas RR Custom when you pry it out of my cold dead hands. Personally, i think my RR-1 is my best sounding guitar. The neck pickup sounds crystal clear, while the bridge has great crunch. Also, i have also noticed i tend to play the 22 fret RR-1 more than the 24 fret soloist. My advice is to try it out...some love it, some do not. The attitude of the rhoads is killer.

The Rhoads model is 22 fret, which automatically disqualifies it for me.

If you are into shapes, then an RR1 owns it IMHO. I personally am playing str@t shaped guitars at the moment and due have an SL2H, but I still have my '84 RR and have no plans of selling it. If 24 frets is your issue, then stay with the soloist. But for easy of lower board access, nothing beats a V and the RR is still my favorite becuase it is well balanced and can be played sitting down (the lower point does not get it the way the same way it does on a KV - which I also have one of and it has been in the closet for a long time).

Just my thoughts.

I love the RR body shape, it hangs perfect and as said here a couple of times..just FEELS right to me.

Buy one of each, better yet two!

In a live situation - standing up - and shredding - nothing beats a Rhoads shape. Very good balance and more important: when you raise your relaxed fret-arm and grab the neck, what fret area did you grab? Around fret 9-12 right?! Shred position!

Try that with a Soloist. You'll end up at around fret 5-9. Not shred position.

Heh, just my opinion The Rhoads shape just feels right for me.

I'm with Jackson1. My Rhoads just hangs in the best playing postion of any of my guitars.
