• DK-1: Bastard Stepchild?

I hear very little talk about the DK-1 here. Also, recently Scott at Vwall tried to put together a limited run of copperhead DK-1s with matching headstocks at a very reasonable price and I think I was the only one who bit, and the run was cancelled. I know it's a bolt-on with relatively limited/impeded upperfret access, but isn't it also the only regular production model that has the single feature that drew me to Jackson guitars in the first place: a thin oil-finished neck?

Let's hear what you thinky about dinky.

Re: DK-1: Bastard Stepchild?

I'd say it was probably because there are a lot of people who are still under the misguided impression that "Jackson = neckthrough" or "Neckthrough is better, bolt-on is flimsy".
We've had those arguments time and time again, and no one can ever come up with any substantial evidence of longer sustain, better tone, and the like. They usually end up saying "Well, neckthrough costs more, so it must be better"

Then again, there's also been a rash of anti-Floydism around here, so that may have been part of it.

Then there's the single-hum bunch vs the dual hum bunch vs the hum-single bunch vs the h-s-s bunch.

The EMGs vs DiMarzio vs Duncan vs "I want it to come with xx pickup model if we're going with xx brand"

The "I want a non-standard backshape/fretsize/radius/feature" crowd and the ebony vs maple vs rosewood vs dots vs fins vs whatever crowd.

Then there's the 24 3/4" vs 25 1/2" scale crowd, and the "can I get it with xx graphic/color instead for the same price?" people.

Not to mention the "can I upgrade to this custom-shop-only feature for free or cheap?" (binding color, headstock direction, inlay direction, hardware color, etc etc)

Then again, for alot of folks, it's just the economy.

Anyway, IMO the regular version of the Dk1 just plain rock...

Natural Dk1... yummy !

I don't know if it's allowed or not, but how much were the limited Copperheads? PM it if necessary.

Re: DK-1: Bastard Stepchild?

I just sold my DK1. They are absolutely killer guitars and, IMHO, have the flat out best neck profile in the entire USA product line. Thin and wide, feeling similar to a San Dimas Charvel. Extremely highly recommended.

I think they're more popular than many realize, as they seem to sell quickly when I see them pop up at dealers. If they have any negatives, they are only in perception or preferences, as Newc mentions.

The only reasons I sold mine were that a) I've got several other guitars in the pipeline and needed to thin the heard, and b) I just didn't dig the EMGs.

If you're interested, I would try to grab one sooner than later. I wouldn't be surprised if J/C decides to drop this model soon, to better focus bolt-on attentions to the new USA Charvel line.

pedalGeek, you've hit the Dinky's high and low points, IMO. I LOVE the thin, oiled neck, but I HATE the days-of-yesteryear neck heel. I'd be all over a Dinky if Jackson went to an all access heel, a la Ibanez.

I love the USA Fusions, but the necks are just a little too thin. If someone has a thicker necked USA Fusion for sale, I would like to buy one pronto!! I love the 24.75 scale with 9-42 strings, nice and slinky. Point being the necks are the same on the dinkys and fusions, my only complaint. Jack.

Re: DK-1: Bastard Stepchild?

I love the DK1. I have bought 3 from members here since summer. More spec I love the oiled neck If you want a new bolt-on Jackson you have one choice unless you go custom. I prefer passive pups but the last one I got has EMGs.

I'm a convert.... I used to be neck-thru is the best you can buy bolts are inferior crowd. I have seen the light

As far as the copperhead, I just didn't dig that one. If he came up with right DK1 I would be all over it. I loved the matching headstock though

Re: DK-1: Bastard Stepchild?

Doesn't the SLATQH (they're starting to exagurate with the names ) have an oil-finished neck? Or isn't that regarded as a regular model (other than being limited).

Re: DK-1: Bastard Stepchild?

The SLATQH is a limited production guitar meaning that only a limited amount are made each year (not sure on the number). They used to have oiled necks up until this year. The 2004 models have painted necks.

I prefer neck thru guitars because it's comfortable for me at the upper frets. I think DK-1s are great guitars. I would have been in on the copperhead run, but I have too much going on right now as far as guitars. Who knows what may happen with Jackson this coming year, but I would not be suprised if they dropped a model or two from the lineup

I personally don't like the dinky shape bodies very much.

I much prefer the full strat body guitars. If it were one of those, I would have ordered one.

see, I'd love to pick up a DK-1 in Graveyard, but I'm worried about the neck warping due to the cold here in Canada eh?

that's mostly why I've stayed away from them! If I'm totally off base here lemme know, because I had a friedn with an I-been-had (Ibanez) that warped like a bastard because of temperature changes

I love my lefthanded DK1. The neck is awesome. I'm more comfortable playing it than playing my RR1.

Cerastine Order, you must live in Nunavut if the weather is that cold. I'm in NS and have never had a neck warp on a bolt-on Jackson, Charvel or any other brand.

Buy the DK1 and if the neck warps, due to the cold, I'll have Bill Z Bubbles blow ya.
