Questions about my SLATQM (WARNING pic heavy)

I just bought this from Carl and I can't tell you how happy I am with it (I can't tell you how great it is to work with Carl either). I was a little concerned with the mini hums as to how they would sound. Was I suprised! They are a little thinner sounding, but it's a really nice balance with the mahogany. YOu can actually get a real good shred sound as well as incredible clean tones. Soloing with the neck pickup is unbelievable!
Question 1) Does anyone know what kind of pickups these are? I would think SD, but I thought those had the SD logo on the covers. I would guess maybe Dimarzio, but I have no way of telling unless I pull the pickups the next time I change the strings (which I will).
Question 2) The fretboard looks like rosewood, but it's as smooth and dense as ebony. Could it be Brazilian Rosewood or just undyed ebony with a really natural grain? From the little bit I can gather on these, it's supposed to be ebony, but I have had a hard time getting any details. It plays and feels great. I was just curious.

Very nice score. I don't know about the pickups either. But more than likely that is an ebony board. Ebony that is pure black is very rare. And most of the ones you see that are really dark usually have been dyed to look that way. If that's rosewood it's an exceptional piece of rosewood. You rarely ever find rosewood that dark anymore because the supply of the really good stuff is so limited. So I would say it's ebony that has no dye added.

Rosewood usually has wider gaps for the spacing in the grain, too. That's definitely ebony, but looks a little parched. Just shoot some lemon oil on it, and it'll look darker (and not dry out, too).

As to the PUs, I'm fairly certain they were Duncans. P90s, I believe. (?)

I think these are Duncans but non logo'd because if logo'd , it would look ugly on this beauty.
The fretboard is Rosewood but must be very fine Rosewood instead of cheaper one.
So your guitar is great!!
I love the trans Blue over the Quilt and it looks the best I have ever seen!!!

Thanks guys. I wasn't planning on posting pics, but I had it out for pictures today and I couldn't resist posting them. I kinda figured it was ebony. I've seen streaked ebony, but never this light. I love the feel of it. I know the pickups are the mini hums, just wasn't sure of the brand. Here is a pic of a SLATQ90 that has the P90s.


Here is one like mine from the gallery, but it has Duncan logoed pup covers.


I'll have to look undeneath them next string change.

I think it's ebony, but I could be wrong. from looking at it I would say rosewood, but when you feel it, it's smooth and dense. I would say brazilian rosewood, but the coloring looks totally different. [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

Toru, thats the way I feel. I've always prefered the feel of ebony myself, but what ever this is, It feels great and looks great.

The fretboard does look like a very nice piece of rosewood, but it could be an undyed piece of ebony as others have said as well. Either way, it is very nice. If you like the way it feels it really doesn't matter what it is. I love the logo. Very nice!

The pickups should be Duncans, I don't think DiMarzio makes mini-hums. Most of the guitars I've seen with Duncan minis don't have the logo.

Well, Thats what I thought, but Dimarzio does make a few mini hums and they have non logoed covers. As Far as I know, the SDs have logoed covers, but I'm not sure if you can get them nonlogoed. Did Jackson ever use duncans stock in anything other than PC1's?

I'd be tempted to say that's an ebony board, but just a very light one. I do agree with hitting the board with some lemon oil... it should darken it up beautifully. My Shannon also has a slightly lighter-than-usual ebony board but not quite as light as that.

Rosewood boards tend to have bigger "gaps" and deeper "dings" to it while ebony is a LOT smoother and doesn't exhibit as much varying grain patterns, in my observations. If your board was truly rosewood, you'd be able to see the grain patterns in the first picture you posted even standing at that distance. But, you can't, so I'd guess that it's ebony, just a very light ebony.
