Yep, the SPC does a nice job of fattening up the 81. If I were sticking with one EQ control it'd definitely be the SPC.

Mr. Manboobs Toejam, cover me on this one: EMG 85 in the bridge without further thoughts! No matter what guitar or music style!

I have emgs in a number of guitars including 89KV (81/85), '81 LPC (81/85), 2002 GMW (81), 2001 ESP M1Cus (81/81), Strat Mut (81/81).

Very cool pickups IMHO. Less bite than the TB4, so that you can let the amp do your talking.

Has anybody used the EMG 81 in down-tuning situations? It seems like if you are tuning down to C B or A, the 81 may be a better choice, where the EMG 85 might fart out at loud volumes.

I have guitars with passives and some with EMG's. They all sound great but I generally prefer passives to EMG's. I do have a Copperhead SL1H with factory EMG 81 and it sounds great but I always disliked the fact that the volume knob on EMG's doesn't fade away smoothly. Just something you have to live with on EMG's. I installed an EMG 81/SA/SA set in my Charvel Model 6 back in the 80's and they act the same way. They're still in there to this day.
I don't have any Jacksons with an 85 in the bridge so I can't comment on that. The only guitar I have with an 85 in the bridge is a neck thru ESP M1. Others have already described what the 81 and 85 sound like in the bridge position.

Instead of using the SPC to fatten up the 81, just use an 85

We use 85 in the bridge and we tune to B, and no fart whatsoever, but that is clean in to a Dual Recto to a Genz Benz GFlex cab, which more than handles mushy bass...

Since EMGs have the quick clip plugs, isn't there a way you can swap em out with a friend or somethin' for a few hours to try out?

i have an 81 running at 18 volts in the bridge of my 91 skully SL1, it kicks ass. i would however swap an 85 into it if i had a spare, i dig them both over a TB4 anyday,,,,but tone is subjective so, Y.M.M.V.

just add another batt. clip in series. just open the control cav., cut your black wire that comes off the batt. clip and goes to the output jack in half, and solder your 2nd clip here, black to the black output wire, the red to the other batt.

so you have ,

RED PUP WIRE___to____RED BATT. WIRE(1)______BLACK BATT. WIRE(1)____to RED BATT. WIRE(2)
BLACK BATT.WIRE (2)____to____OUTPUT JACK.

Awesome man \m/
Thanks.

So,does it actually improve the sound? What would be the main difference?

it opens them up alittle more, gives them more headroom and bite on the attack.

or if you want to compare them without alot of cutting and ****,
and have 3 extra clips, you can make an 18 volt clip harness.

black from clip 1,,,to red of clip 2(batt 1) black of clip 2 ,,,to red of clip 3(batt 2) black of clip 3 ,,to red of clip 1.
now you have an 18 volt clip harness.

just snap it in to the clip thats in your guitar
