can someone explain to me what the difference is, neck and heel wise, between an SD and a current soloist? a friend of mine has an '85 all-white (mathcing head) kahlered, but i don;t find anything special about it. the things like, fret-ended binding's cool, but the thinner neck didn't do anything for me.

You need to try more before making a decision. There all lots of variations.
"Being routed for a trem cover, but not having one installed is odd. I know they would not route it if you asked them not to. I'd do a check for flaws under the paint, etc... "
As far as the paint goes, I am as sure as I can be it is original. No evidence of tampering anywhere and is even the same finish as my old ones (not the same as modern ones). Never had even one screw for the trem plate. Maybe the builder did the final ssembly at home or on his own time and never got around to putting the plate on? Who knows.
Yeah, I'm sure you'd be able to tell if it was original paint or not. I was thinking it might have been a second/blem that an employee might have taken. That would be a good reason not to give it a serial too, and could also explain why a trem cover would never have been attached.

Possible. I wonder what policy was on seconds was over the years. Remember that lightning with clouds on Ferarri red '87 Strat I had? That one must have been a blemish they ran through again. The first shade of red was different than the exposed shade. You could see the color differences in the chips on the edge.
Yes, it was serialed. I understand your point, I was just thinking about the 2nds policy since it was mentioned. It just brought up some new thoughts that are unrelated to this topic.
Great! Feels great and has as low action as you want, so I had to raise it a hair to make it comfortable. The bridge pickup is a Full Shred, which is one I am not used to. I really want to give it a chance before making a decision on keeping it or changing it.

Oooh.... I just love guitars that do that! A sign of a good one I think. Well at least all of the ones I've kept are like that.

I had no idea they made soloists in any other nut width than 1 11/16". Jim do you have any that are 1 5/8" or 1 3/4" nut widths? Most of the Jackson literature references 1 11/16", right?
This soloist is awesome. Most soloists with H-S-S also usually have a tone and I really like the single volume layout.
I had a purple '85 Student with a 1 5/8" nut. I only noticed it because the neck felt unusually small to me and I decided to take some measurements. Thinking back I am wondering if my Kullick Student was 1 5/8" as well as that neck was almost identical in every way. I never even thought of different widths being a possible issue at the time. I will look at my current necks. I am rather sure they are all the standard 1 11/16".
I like how they placed the volume knob right in the scallop of the flame.
