• Pawn Shop find RR # 1840-Questions

Hey Kids, been chasing this RR for a year or so, the pawn shop where it resided thought a little too highly of it, but eventually saw the error of their ways. That, and a little harassment helped. It's funny how the whole world thinks you are trying to screw them, when all you really want is a fair deal.

This is the first one I have bought that wasnt really cleaned up, and ready to go. It was pretty skanked out when I started, but it is coming around for sure. Been polishing today, watching football, and staring inside at the guts, looking like I know what I am doing, when actually, I have no clue.

    Questions,

Can someone help me get rid of those god-awful skull tuners? They are Jackson logo tuners, if that helps. I will gladly pay for them.

There is a number, 80723, written inside the truss area, what does that mean?

Does the wiring, parts, pups etc.. all look original?

Thanks so much for the help, I learn so much here. It plays great, and sounds really nice acoustically, so I figured I did ok.

The skulls look like replacement knobs, you should be able to unscrew them and put a new set on without changing the tuners themselves. I can't really comment on the rest...

Well my suggestion is to turn it into a project guitar (obviously). Replace the hardware, etc, etc. You'll learn all the stuff + get a kick-ass guitar in the end.

Actually, now that its cleaned up, its in incredible shape. The only thing needing to go is the skull tuners as far as I can tell. I mean, its no museum piece, but I have enough of them already.

Those skulls just screw on - easily replaceable, though I can't think of where to find the regular knobs

                    WOW,
If you have a good luthier in the area he can probably buff that RR to a brilliant shine again. The brass hardware can be re-plated. You may have some luck at a Harley-Davidson dealer that knows an aftermarket plating shop. Say, how are the points. Either way, congratualtions.

Hit the brass with some nevr dull or brite shine. Should clean up just fine.

I'd say it was original wiring. I'd rip it out and throw a set of emgs in it.

As suggested, a visit to www.stewmac.com is in order here. They have a fantastic "Fine" polish and swirl remover, and if you want to tackle the fretboard crack, they have ebony colored superglue with a fine tip applicator. Just be careful and check out the helpful tips on the website. You'll learn a lot. It looks like a fret level/dress is needed. You may want to attack that with an experienced luthier if you feel it's out of your league. Someone played a lot of hours on that baby! You can also replace the "black" pickup mounting screws and other corroded items. Like it was suggested you have a project there, but not too bad. The electronics look imported, not American components. Although I don't know the years Jackson (American mfr.)used American stuff, like CTS pots, etc. If your pots are not too scratchy, I'd just clean them with contact cleaner. It you replace the pots or switches, I'd visit Allparts. They sell the CTS and switchcraft brands.

Well, she took a trip to the luthier today. The pickups are Jackson US, a J80, and a S-80N (?). 10 minutes after he got a hold of it, it looked even better. He is gonna replace the wiring (which btw was original, because apparently, there is a date code on the capacitors of June 86) and a fret dress. I am just gonna deal with the way the brass turned out after polishing, and the fretboard wasnt even noticable until we saw the photo, and its only on the last four frets. Cant even feel it. Overall, pretty pleased.

Looks like a great axe, Shawn. Please post some pics after you get it back from the luthier. By the way, is the luthier going to put some glue in the fingerboard split? Still, I'm glad to see that the RR now has a good home instead of being banished to a pawn shop.
