Searching for "Binding over frets" pics or thread

Hi Guys,
I'm coming down to the final details on a custom order and I need to know or see what the " Binding Over Frets" option is on the Custom Shop order form. I know I was reading about this just last week but I can't find the thread [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]
Any help would be appreciated-

hey jim i found some pics of my shannon on your site, but it had chrome tuning pegs in the photo.


it had black when i bought it.
did you replace them?
just curious.

Nope, I never replaced them. They were chrome though and had "Jackson" kind of etched into the metal rather than silkscreened with ink. I would contact the last owner and see if he still has the tuners.

yeah i just mailed him.

its weird he only had it for a few months before selling it.
why would he put new black ones(also with jackson logos) on it?

Perhaps he liked the look of black tuners? I know some guys like the black with black headstock. As far as the speed of the change, I have seen bigger changes in shorter periods of time (J0440 as an example).

Hey, guys, is that a pocket in the binding or it's just the visual effect, so in reality the fret is just shorter that regular and that "overbound" piece is solid? I hope you know what I have in mind.

What they do is bind the neck with the frets in place, then scrape the binding down between the frets. The leftover piece of material next to the fret is then dressed like a fret end. So, the little plastic 'cap' beside the fret is one piece with the binding. This is a labor intensive way of doing the job.

Wow, I totally didn't know that! [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] I always imagined it was one thin strip of binding and just stretched the little areas over the fret ends, like when you stretch paraffin wax taut over an uneven surface, but what do I know? [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Immortal, there's actually the fret underneath the binding as I understand it. It sort of does feel like the fret is shorter if I fret incorrectly. Occasionally, when I am playing wildly, I might fret the high E string on the binding itself... [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] I can feel a little "bump" when I transition from the metal fret to the binding. Terrible technique on my part... The only fret material is what you see. The frets are installed into the unbound neck, ends filed flush to the channel wall, then binding is glued in place.

Hmm, then the name "binding over frets" is slightly misleading, would you not agree? because if the actual metal fret is chopped off of either end and there's binding shaped to mimic the fret ends, it's more like "binding capping the ends of the frets" rather than literal "binding over frets".

I drew a rough diagram on MS Paint. Tell me if I've understood you right.
