Re: Rhoads LTD question...

Ed Roman's site lists alder, a friend of mine who has one says maple and now poplar pops up. More opinions? Or facts?

Well, I have no idea what Ed is saying since he is probably building fakes.
It could be Basswood with Pinewood.

Re: Rhoads LTD question...

I said Poplar with Maple neck because one of PCS RRs from the Gallery says so.
So I guessed it maybe LTDs are the same...
I checked couple of E-bay auctions of the past but these sellers didn't even give any details of what wood......

Re: Rhoads LTD question...

Alder would make sense to me since early rhoads guitars were built with alder wings, but Ed Roman being right just doesn't make sense. Mike Shannon should know.
The only LTD that I have tried was quite heavy so that would mean maple wings. I'm sure someone here knows the truth.

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know. I know my Shortwing is 100% maple and heavy has hell. I'd bet maple with poplar wings on the production LTD's.

Re: Rhoads LTD question...

I did some research and here's what I believe is the accurate list:
1992 LTD Rhoads -> Maple / Maple
PCS Original Rhoads -> Poplar / Maple
Polka Dot V -> Poplar / Maple
JCF01 -> Alder / Maple

And here is what Randy played:
Polka Dot Sandoval V -> Honduras Mahogany
Prototype Rhoads -> Maple
First Rhoads -> Alder

This is based on catalog info, Sandoval comments, collectors opinions plus checking on LTD out and seeing the wood by removing the jack input plate.
There is a catalog with all Randy signatures listed and above info matches with that.
Hope this is helpful to someone.

JCF01 was made out of Alder wings?
I didn't know about that.. I thought it was Poplar wings..

Re: Rhoads LTD question...

I read that from JCF members website here:
http://autumn-frost.com/gear.html

Jackson started using poplar in mid 84 I think - I think Jim Shine has more accurate info on that? 83 RRs are made of alder and most likely cause that's how they were
made for Randy. I guess the LTD prototype rhoads was a bit heavy for Randy and Jackson went from maple to alder for the first Rhoads.

Newc's website.
Then it should be correct.

It's funny that Randy's guitars were made by Maple and then later switched to Alder, that is very different weight and tone....

Work order said Alder IIRC.

Randy also used a mahogany Les Paul and mahogany Sandoval V. Maybe he wanted to have different sounding guitars.

Here is a catalog page with all the signature models:
