• Update: J3172- United AL broke the neck..justice!

This will probably shock many people; I know I'm pretty amazed...Some may remember that last July/August, I checked one of my Soloists, an '87 Custom, when we flew home to Montana. My wife and I watched as the baggage handlers literally threw the case (marked fragile no less)onto the conveyor more than once. When we arrived in MT, I opened the case and the neck was snapped right at the Floyd nut. I went thru the claim process right away and tried to get them to pay to replace the guitar when we got back to STL. After 2 months of calling people, I finally reached a human being, who proceeded to reject my claim. Well, I was beyond pissed.
Well, a few weeks ago, I went back to their STL office to pick up the broken guitar. The attendant went in the back, grabbed it, and asked me the situation. I told her the whole deal and she was shocked that the claim would be rejected. She called the vp of baggage operations or something like that and he came down and looked at the guitar. He was actually polite and acted concerned. The reason it was initially rejected was because the CASE didn't have the same kind of damage that the guitar did, despite my insistence that this type of break wouldn't necessarily result in case damage. So I explained all of this to this vp guy and he said he would try and work with me on it.
Finally, someone at this corporation who gives a darn about customers and their property! On Monday, I received a check to replace the guitar with a new SL1. I didn't ask for the retail SL1 amount; I told him that I could buy a new one in the 1500 range and that was all that I was asking for. He also was cool enough to add in a couple of $100 vouchers if we ever flew United again.
So, everything turned out fine in the end. He even let me keep the guitar.

WOW! Glad it worked out for you! I'm shocked. I never would have guessed that they would have sprung for a new one.

Still doesn't replace an intact guitar that had potential sentimental meaning to you, but still, that check could possibly pay for a repair and another guitar even.

Good to hear you got some recourse! Since you were able to keep the guitar, are you thinking of getting it repaired? I've seen some amazing work from various luthiers where they resurrected guitars that I thought would have been beyond repair. Maybe you can get this done at GMW and get a cool custom paintjob at the same time.

I remember that story yes, I'm really glad it turned out well for you. At least some justice in a case like that, I've experienced the opposite.

Wow they let you keep the old one plus bought you a new one - so after you purchase a new neck you'll have 2 soloist for the price of a neck - horrible

That's actually very cool. I wouldn't think they would go any further with that after the initial rejection of the claim. Very cool, congrats. So what finish will that new SL1 have, lol?

Yeah, the guy that worked with me really was great to deal with. Actually seemed like he was concerned about the whole thing.
To clarify: They didn't buy me a new Soloist. They wrote me a check so that I can buy a new Soloist. $1500 plus two $100 vouchers for future airfare, in hopes that we will use United again. If you would have asked me a month or so ago, I would have never thought about flying UAL again. Now, more than likely, yes.
As far as what will happen with J3172...It's a burnt burgundy metallic, really dark, that I stuck a new JB and a Cool Rail in. It had just received a crown and polish of the frets and a complete setup, The JB has a coil tap. I had all this work done to it so it'd be my ultimate stage guitar. It has plenty of dings and marks so I didn't worry about banging it around. Although, it still looked excellent, I should say. I have tried to glue the headstock back in alignment. The headstock was not all the way busted off. The typical "Floyd nut thru the neck break" kind of thing. I have not put strings back on it to see if it will handle that stress but, if I can get it tuned up and the nut locked down, I may be able to tinker with it a bit. I talked to Lee at GMW and he says that a LOT would need to be done to fix it. But, for now, it's stringless.

Yea to fix a problem like that, you will probably need to refinish the whole guitar as well.

Glad you got something good out of the deal. That's the way customer service is supposed to work, just hardly ever does anymore.

Glad it worked out in the end. Too bad it was broken to begin with.

if you get rid of it lemme know :0 I'm talking just the guitar, bridge, and tuners, you can have the electronics I'd be interested in trying to fix it. Granted, I've NEVER done that kind of repair, but only one way to learn
