• New Soloist

I picked this one up from Paddok (thank you sir) a couple of weeks back:

Great axe and the only lacewood Soloist I've seen. I've wanted a lacewood guitar for years but had never found the right one.

This one just kills but there's one thing I'd have done differently: I'd have spec'd a natural finish or very light transparent color for the body as the color in the stain really covers up the grain. Compare my pics above to Brooks' lacewood PC-1:

*That* is how a lacewood guitar should look. This one's very good, that one's great. So if any of you are tempted to pony up for a custom shop lacwood in the future, choose your finish color carefully.

I do like that one. Nice score. Nothing better than a unique Jackson.

                Re: New Soloist

Thanks guys, I'm really digging this one. Here're a few full-res shots that show the grain in the body a little better:

                Pic 1
                Pic 2
                Pic 3

The flash still washed it out quite a bit, it's definitely better in person. Looking at how the grain is revealed on the neck, I'm thinking that a lacewood archtop would just rule!

Wow, that's awesome! I've seen a few lacewood bodies, but that's a first for a neck. How does it compare tone wise with other woods? I totally agree on the natural finish. That would look great!

                  Congratulations, sweet guitar!

                    Re: New Soloist

Chris it's a little tough for me to compare woods because I rarely have the same pups in any two (FWIW this one appears to have a Duncan Custom in the bridge, I didn't pull & check the singles yet) so I'm never sure if I'm hearing the difference in woods or the difference in pups.

That said I'd characterize this one as fairly resonant, with good clarity & articulation. The tone is fairly even, not as bright as say maple but not as warm as mahogany. If you're a little jaded (like myself) it's something different which is always cool.
