Re: Wow...Jackson Shannon Rhoads LTD Custom

Alright, may be a dumb question, but what color is this thing? I'd like to think I've got some decent monitors and I can't tell, is it black with the protective coating in place, or is green as the images would imply?

I think what you see as green may be the pickguard? The guitar though is clearly black with a brass pickguard. What makes it hard to see it that black background they used for the shot.

So the Shannon built is about $550 more on the list than the Non Shannon..

          [/ QUOTE ]

If Fender is smart they will begin using Mike much like they do the "Masterbuilt" Strat guys. A $550 upcharge for one built by Mike is a bargain.

            Great point, Larry...

They have a great opportunity to utilize Mike Shannon's reputation and at the same time offer us (the buyer's) some great one-off guitars.

Re: Wow...Jackson Shannon Rhoads LTD Custom

Not a bad idea, if Mike is in fact building these personally and not just supervising and signing. How would we ever know? I am just asking. Does Mike have his own section of the shop where he can work on guitars by himself? Will production of the regular line stop when he has to use the pin router or other machines in the shop?

Let me clarify. Will they just be put in line with the production guitars for regular stuff like routing and painting and wiring? That kind of stuff. Or will Mike be building these from A-Z?

I was told a similar upcharge was also laid onto another killer guitar at a different dealer. Over and above normal custom shop pricing, I mean.

Sorry guys, but that's quite the hefty premium. There's no freakin' way I'll pay multiple hundreds of dollars above normal custom / USA Select pricing just for Mike S.'s magic touch and sig on the headstock. No offense to Mike, as his reputation speaks for itself, and I have nothing but the highest respect for his work. But a premium that high is quite absurd, IMHO. And I doubt very many custom shop buyers will be willing to go that high, either. (As evidence: that other guitar I speak of has still not sold in a couple of months or so. If it had normal custom shop pricing - or even a slight/reasonable premium - I or others would snapped it up within days of it being listed for sale.)

I might pay that much if it would gaurantee a time as to when the guitar would be finished.

                        Yeah, an "expidite order" fee

Someone's "autograph" on the guitar doesn't make it worth more, to me, if anything, it's worth less.

Re: Wow...Jackson Shannon Rhoads LTD Custom

The Fender crowd pays a huge premium for Masterbuilt guitars made by Mark Kendrick, John English, etc. Not to take anything away from them, but they are insignificant in the Fender world compared to Mike Shannon in the C/J world. The C/J market probably isn't mature enough for a Masterbuilt program at this point or in the near future. I do think though at some point Fender will figure out that Mike is a very valuable resource to the company. What about a Masterbuilt batch of LTD's, say a run of 10-20 built by Mike w/ certificate? How about a small batch of HRF guitars or flametops like the 25th anniversary but made by Mike with necks hand shaped by Mike, etc? What the heck, how about having Mike do a run of a few polka dots w/ the harpoon headstock while he is at it. If they did this the right way with Mike making a very limited batch of killer guitars they could charge a fortune for each and then follow it up with the "regular" production run along the lines of the EVH guitars.

I for one have very little interest in a new Custom Shop guitar. I'm the first in line if they start an official Masterbuit series and I could have Mike make the particular C/J's I have in mind.

If I recall correctly, Mike Shannon worked at Fender until coming back to Jackson recently. So, if I am correct, Fender already would know what he's capable of.

Dang, that's a beautiful guitar (and I thought I had completely sworn off the funky-shaped ones, too!).

I like the ideas expressed above to capitalize upon/profit from Mike Shannon's celebrity while giving more fans a chance to obtain his work.

Re: Wow...Jackson Shannon Rhoads LTD Custom

I've always thought the "Master Built" guitars from Fender were an insult to their customers, but it seems they have too much money to care they are being ripped off. The Gibson crowd are much the same.

Where does the Custom Shop stand against these "master built" guitars? What comes next? You want a great guitar? Forget these "master built" piles of crap, you want one of the new "Built By God" guitars. They are pricey and the wait is long, but they are worth it.

Seriously, where is it gonna stop? The Custom Shop should be the place to get all your awesome custom guitars. I would never pay extra above Custom Shop pricing for a custom guitar on principle. Mike works for Charvel/Jackson now, he should be helping to build all our guitars, but of course, coporate greed and the publics willingness to be pillaged means that probably won't happen. I'd much rather have my poorly built standard Custom Shop PCS than the one above.
