• Recently got an SL2H

Got a pretty good deal on a SL2H in metallic black from GC in Tacoma for around $1172 out the door with case etc. Its my first guitar with a floyd and I'm still trying to get the hang of it etc. I generally have my action higher and have 10s or 11s on my other guitars, but the playability is of course awesome with the stock 9s and low action on this guitar. What do you guys think? Bad idea to go to higher gauge and action?

I've got low action on all my guitars, but I recently set my Les Paul back to higher action so I get that little bit of "fight" with it - kinda helps the tone IMO.
I'd say set it how you want, but if you leave it light and low, you'll probably want all your guitars set that way - effortless fretting is a GOOD thing

Yeah, I usually find the tone is better with higher action. It seems to be a fatter tone to my ears, but this comes at the cost of some playability.

yeah, i set my action a little high, i mean, jacksons play beautifully either way, but i like to feel the strings, i like to press down on them a little harder, and vibrato the **** out of them, i dunno, its just more satisfying.
Cheers

guys, but what do you mean with "high" and "low"?
How many mm or tenth of an inch is the perfect action for you all?

Well,

According to factory specs, 1.5 mm is the minimum recomended height.
I like Floyd equipped axes to have low action, but prefer higher action on TOM or string through guitars.

I keep the action on all my guitars as low as I can get it without string buzz.

.009's and low action on all my guitars. Feel especially good on the RR1T and Les Paul Customs.

Re: Recently got an SL2H

It just seems like the 9s don't sound as good to me. They sound kind of "plinky" if that makes any sense. It may just be an attack thing. I'm used to 10s or 11s on electrics and 12s on my acoustic, which I can still bend strings on and play lead etc. So 9s feel really small, and I try to pick softer to accomodate that. Tips? Do you guys that use 9s pick softer with them to avoid that rubber band type attack?

I use 10's and it still plays better than most of my other guitars with 10's (the PRS is an exception). Jackson's will play great with almost any string gauge. They are made to be fast guitars, and going to 10's won't change that. I also think 9's feel like rubber bands. I just can't stand it. Especially when I drop it a half step or full step. But you can always go back to how it is now if you find that you like the 9's better.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll just have it setup with 10s and slightly higher action and see how it feels, I can always go back to stock later.

Re: Recently got an SL2H

Well, I got some sweet tones last night from just dialing back the treble a lot more than I usually would (like 10'oclock). I think I'll try to to stick with the 9s for a little longer. Thanks for the help guys. I think it helps because I naturally have a fairly aggressive attack, and with the attack being the brightest part of the note, combined with the 9s reacting to the attack in a more extreme way than 10s, I was getting way too much treble I guess.

I switched to 10s. Much better for me. I don't find the 10s play much slower than the 9s really. Sounds sweet and plays great

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> OK, if you insist. I also like how they say typing on a computer will make you develope Carpal Tunnel, but people were typing long before with out the same problems. Poor technique with repetetive motion = Carpal Tunnel. This applies to both guitar playing and typing.

Cangrats on your fine new ax. I like other guitars too, but *nothing* plays like a US soloist (Except my early 89-90's SLAT Pros ).
