Pic request (soloist / dinky)

Guys,

I'd like to get a pic of a non-artchtop dinky or soloist that has body binding. I'm trying to spec a custom shop and can't quite picture a std soloist style (i.e. with a forearm contour) with body binding.

Also, and this might be a really dumb question, but does anyone know why both the dinky and soloist body styles are listed on the Jackson custom quote form (I thought the sillouettes of both bodies were the same)

You could check out some pics of the SLS. The body is a bit thiner, but comes with binding.

I guess both dinky and soloist body styles are listed, because from the manufacturing process it's something completely different (bolt on vs. neck through).

There is no forearm contour if you get binding on the body...

Remember that on the quote form you first choose "neck through" or "bolt on" and then you choose the body style, so the body style doesn't tell you construction style.

But isn't the dinky body smaller than the soloist? So you could get a neck through dinky or a bolt-on soloist?

Soloist and Dinky body shapes are similar if not identical, except for a neck-thru or bolt on design. The templates might actually be slightly different, but not enough to tell unless you had them side by side, if that is even the case.

Dinky Strat was the name of the body shape before the term Soloist was coined.

Dinky and soloist are slightly different shapes, the Soloist is larger and has longer horns. You can´t really see the difference if they aren´t side by side, though. I´didn´t think there was one until I had my second soloist and went back to the dinky, then thought "Huh? What´s wrong here, wasn´t that horn longer [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img] "

That´s why the Jackson CS lists them as different shapes, because they are [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]


Dinky (´97 DK-1)

Soloist (´88 Ontario)

BTW, the Soloist has binding AND a forearm contour, but it´s not factory work [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Binding is square... you can bend it on one plane just fine, but if you try bending it horizontally and vertically it will resist and either not set properly, or pull away from the route with the slightest bit of help.

Also, as I said before, it takes a relatively SQUARE, flat edge, you know, like a 90 degree angle to route, and apply that binding.

I've seen dozens of guitars with body binding. ALL of them have had square edges, i.e. no body bevels, on the side where there is binding. Rhoads with body binding, no bevels, Soloists, Strats, Kellys, KVs, no bevels... Is that really a difficult concept to grasp?

Perhaps you should just ask a dealer.

It can be done, I´ve seen it before (some Ibanez Prestiges, for example), and I´ve also done it myself on the past. It´s just significantly more time consuming and labor intensive(= more expensive) on that part of the guitar.

Remember also that if you heat plastic (= binding) then it becomes much easier to work with [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Oh I grasp the concept of what is currently done fine, but I still stuggle to imagine that if we can send men into space, binding round a body contour is not beyond the wit of mankind..... [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Look at my soloist: It has both, that´s what that red/white "rim" is, not a bad pic (Do I look like Toejam? [img]/images/graemlins/poke.gif[/img] ).

If it were impossible to bind a forearm contour, that guitar could not exist in it´s current form. And as we can plainly see, it does exist, what more proof could one require? )

Whether or not Jackson will do it is another question entirely [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

<font color="aqua">Correct Zerbs, Xeno, buy a bit of binding and heat up a pot of water and play with it for awhile. You'll be amazed at the shapes you can bend this stuff into (side to side also) with a little patience and determination [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] </font>

Guys: thanks for all of your comments on this. I didn't want to start bothering dealers on a whim before I had some more definite ideas. I've asked Matt to check out whether Jackson will do it, and I'll report back when I hear something!
