I own 3 Korina King V's and one Doubleneck Korina King V(custom shop built in 1999)and the difference in tones as compared to a King V made of Mahogony(the later Mustaine series)is very much a weight and tonal issue.Korina(african limba ) comes in white and black-the black being a grainy version with lots of black "veins" or grain.White is the type used in the KV-1 KV-2 and Gibson 58 style Vs.Both are pretty identical in tone comparison-but visually i prefer the white.
Mahogony is a darker sounding wood with dense overtones-while Korina is brighter, lghter and has more sustain properties. In my opinion(results) EMGs are a favorite pickup that I use in my Korina Guitars-while Mahogony is more favorable with a passive design pickup.I've got a late 80s Les Paul Custom w/Duncans that isnt such a desireable axe to play because of weight issues....but thats just me.
Korina weighs much lighter than Mahogony and promotes a brighter sustaining type resonance to my ears.
The only one later Mustaine series KV I owned(string thru-Mahogony) was a boat anchor that was not as appealing to the eye as the sharper KV-1 Original design ad I prefer the older Korina KVs over the later ones.
