• Dimarzio Evolutions in an Mahog Jackson?

Hey all-

Has anyone here tried the Dimarzio Evolution Neck and Bridge pickups in a mahog body/Maple capped guitar, whether it be a SL-2H MAH or another guitar with the same general specs(mahog/maple, neck through mahong neck, 25.5 scale) from Jackson or another camp?

I am selling my Jem on Ebay to fund my SL-2H MAH...the Jem is a really great guitar, but not the right vibe for me (I think I'm a jackson man ). The pickups in the Jem were a little bright, but Im hoping the mahog construction will help with that...otherwise I loved the EVOs. Great definition, very hot and pretty clear...just what I need. That was an Alder body though.

Thanks!

evos have a very bright top end...may equire some tweaking on your amp...i have evos in an old charvel (body wood unknown) that are vey midrangey and top endy...and also a custom set of evos in my sd-reissue (they were made esp. for this guitar)...the re0ish is all mahogany and the evos sound absolutely killer in mahogany...as for a maple top...i dunno, but i've passed on the info that i do know...hope it helps...d.m.

Try out a PC1 in your area, if you can. It has the Dimarzio Super3 in the bridge. Not the same as the Evo - more mid-range, less top end - but it'll get you in the ballpark. And, since the PC1 has a mahogany body with quilted maple cap, you'll have nailed the wood tone, too.

Personally I think DiMazios are too noisy.

I have tried most of the Dimarzio line & I find myself going back to EMG's.(It is tough to beat the good ol' 81-85 combo)I have a Breed pickup in one of my PC1's & I love it.I had tried a EVO prior to the Breed but it just didn't sound very good....to bright & no bottom end to it.The breed has worked out great.

Ive used several mahog guitars with evos.

To me it works very nicely coz i love smooth sounds that compliment things like legato playing.

The mahog cuts some the bright highs evos have in alder and basswood and adds more chunk to the low end. Realy just makes it a far walmer pup in general.

As far as a maple top goes ive used evos with it once but it was a fairly thin top so it made lil diff other than addling a very slightly more agresive attack to the sound.

I would imagine that a fairly thick top would simply put some of the bright highs and not so chunky lows back in the pup

i think it works nice, i have a set of evos in a jem7v (alder) that are lowed from the strings quite a bit to take some of the realy high output from it. Works realy well, they seem to be a pup that reacts very well to things like that.

If you are a hige emg fan you may never get on with them. I personaly dont like active pups much so sd's and dimarzios are always the way i go.

hope that helps a lil

Congrats on getting, a SL2H MAH!!! you won't be dissapointed, i wasn't.. Although i don't have the evo's in mine, the mahogany is really warm, and wears off the highs a bit, I think evos would sound really good with the mahogany.

I've got a USA SLS (mahogany with maple cap) with Evos in both slots and I find them to be fairly devoid of personality. Yeah they're nice and clear, but they also sound a bit tinny to me.
I've got a Japanese-market SLS (NASL) with the same specs with a Duncan Custom in the bridge and JB in the neck, and I much prefer that combo for that guitar - very warm tones from both pickups, though the Custom is way darker than all my other pickups when compared directly to each other.
