• Wow.. is this guitar ever bright.

Playing around with my "poplar" DK1

It's got a nice tone, but it's a little too bright. I'm assuming the ebony is a big factor in this..

I'm not yet sure its harsh..yet, but deffinately brighter than my others.

I think I need to swap out the pickup, try bringing down the highs.

My suggestion is to put a DiMarzio PAF in it. I installed one, in one of my guitars for the same reason, and I'm very satisfied with the results.

You may also want to consider a Tone Zone. They seem to have a "smoothing" effect on the high end.

My GMW Jake E Lee threw me the same curve with the Ebony board and brass hardtail bridge. It has an Alder body, and you know how I dislike Alder .

I wound up with a Duncan Custom in that, but I like the way it cuts through the band. By itself, its still a tad crispy.

I always find ebony to lack brightness. Every maple fingerboarded Jackson I've played seems to have the brightness. I owned a DK-1 similar to yours and found a Duncan Distortion in it sounded exquisite.

Thanks for those suggestions, I have a mid 80's Distortion around, as well as a Super D.

So I'll playaround with those..

I guess when I said "bright", I meant in comparison to pretty much all my other guitars, which have rosewood boards.

I'm still "adjusting" to the guitar, so it may take me awhile to find the sweet spot.

I must say, the fit, finish and hardware are first class, a very well made guitar.

They even stamped the neck plate serial into the neck pocket as well.

I give the Duncan Distortion a big thumbs up also...I have one in my JJ Custom (Mahogany body plus maple top with Rosewood board). The pickup gives the guitar a smooth low end and it's not over the top with the highs. I like the Duncan Distortion much better than the JB.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I just put the distortion in and I'm enjoying it..

I also disconected the tone circut..
A major difference!

With the JB, it was sounding weak, thin..the lead playing had no real.."oomph", in the upper registers.. now it has some balls.

It's strange tho, my old Kramers (Basswood, Alder)sound full with the stock JB zebras, I'm surpised it didn't work in the Jackson..

The Distorion in the Polar Dinky is mucho better.

Thanks Joe!

You are quite welcome, sir. For me, the Duncan Distortion is a picky sob. Most of my guitars don't sound good with it. But when you find one that does, the sound is exceptional.b

Re: Wow.. is this guitar ever bright.

I was sitting here thinking about it and I hear alot of people saying they think the `59 and PAF can be muddy, and then I hear alot of people say the JB sounds like ice picks with no lower end defenition. Has anyone tried the SD Custom 5? I did and I loved it, it falls tonally between the `59 and JB, it has more balls than the `59, but has a little less highs and more bass than the JB, I think it is a very good balanced pickup and I really liked it It may have trouble catching on though, because the `59 and JB floods the most chat sesions, but I will take the Custom 5 please Jack.
