  • PC1 bridge Pickup

I understand what Phil Collen had in mind when he
specified the "Super 3" for the bridge position
in the PC1 because he plays through a cranked (loud) amp. He gets enough treble from the amp so he prefers a pickup that has "chopped" treble.

Well ... I use a modeling amp in my basement studio and I think that the PC1 could use a bit more treble in the bridge position so as an experiment I replaced the "Super 3" with a "Dimarzio Evolution". I am happy with the results: The bridge pickup now blends better with the middle pickup.

Has anyone else replaced your PC1 bridge pickup
and if so what did you use and how does it sound?

    Re: PC1 bridge Pickup

I went Evolution 1st, but thought it was too muddy...then went Duncan Custom Custom, but my Hamer Vector really needed that, so now I have a JB in there and I'm really happy. The guitar now has a good hard rock crunch to it (which is all I like)...I play through Rivera M-100s with JBL speakers, and the Super 3 was very brittle. I actually thought I'd have to get rid of the guitar becuse it didn't work well with my amps. Normally I don't like JB's, but it was right in this guitar/amp combo (go figure!!) When we play live, the PC-1 is usually my first choice stage guitar, but I always take the batteries out first, because I find that the tone is better without them...I know that sounds stupid, but it's like the low end distorts w/ the batteries, but doesn't without. I don't use the sustainer anyway...my music is too fast!! I only bought the guitar because it looked cool and it's the only new Jackson with a maple fretboard...and the huge neck is the best!!!
    GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

    and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

      Re: PC1 bridge Pickup

i've had 2 pc1's, replaced both bridges with tone zones and the guitar came alive. it sounded like a blanket was removed from my amp. the stock pickup is a pile of dung, at least in that guitar it is.

fyi, the end of the pickup connector is a little black thing kind of like what you use to connect a motherboard to the case switches. So you have to clip it a few inches up, and then solder to those wires..

i liked the pc1, but i couldnt stand the neck pickup sound, and you cannot replace it, so off they went.

I have a Dimarzio Super 3 in a Kramer I have. It rocks when you play it on a real tube amp. Modelers make that pickup sound like ****. But I play it through an XXX it and it really breaths and comes alive. That pickup really beefs up a bolt-on neck with a floyd. I can see why he'd use it since their guitars were always pretty big sounding anyway and Clark and Viv played Les pauls and all.

Guys, I've been thinking of doing the same thing to my PC1. I've got a Duncan JB in my Charvel Model 5 that I really like but have been putting off changing out the bridge p/u in my PC. Anyone here ever tried a FRED or EMG's??? Curious to know because I'd really like to balance the volume output between my two guitars a little better.

I haven't noticed any volume problems or lack of treble in the Super 3, yet. I have only had my PC1 for a month, though. I play straight into a Marshall AVT. Actually, I am kinda diggin' the sounds so far!

Personally, I LOVE the Super-3 in my PC1 ! I've been a fan of this pickup since I had one in a Fender HM Strat back in the day. I have Super-3's in four different axes, and they sound great in each one. However, everyone's taste is different, so to each his own. If you must change, I would suggest an Anderson H2+. Check out the details @ Anderson Guitars These are currently my favortie pickup....

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm with Kenn. I love the Super3, too, and have it in three different axes. And two of those are custom shop orders with ash bodies. BTW, the Super3 does well with a coil splitter, too. And sounds particularly good with Virtual Vintage 2.2 SCs.

i have h2+'s in 2 of my andersons, and they rip, i also have an h3 in one of them, it's got a little more ass than the h2+, i still like the h2+ the best. they split better than any pickup i've ever heard, they really split well.
