• San Dimas Jackson Custom S/N 114X (pics)

Recently picked up this sweet Jackson Strat on E-bay... Neck pocket provides a build date of 1/28/86, so it's probably one of the earliest of the Jackson San Dimas strats.

Pickups are Dimarzio (model unknown) for the Hum, and Jackson J100-XL for the singles. I do believe that stock cream-colored Dimarzios were not uncommon during that era, so these could be the original pickups.

The natural-burst finish is really cool and overall great shape with only minor dings here and there. Hardware shows some wear (previous owner must have had REALLY corrosive sweat) but not bad (everything works fine).

Only "major" problem is the headstock had the tip (surpisingly the low-e tip, not the high e-tip) broken off at one point. But the repair job is very good and the fracture is not noticable unless you look closely. Seller claims he didn't even notice it. I was pretty pissed when I got the guitar and saw that, but the seller was apologetic agreed to a reasonable rebate.

Neck has the period-correct no-logo, right-angle tuners. But the neck itself has no markings in neckpocket area. Lack of markings makes me suspicious the neck may not be original. Nevertheless it is a cool neck, definitely a legit Jackson USA neck, with a thick Ebony board and (unusual) no inlays. Instead of the typical oil finish, this neck has a clear coat on it.

One last interesting thing about this guitar is the humbucker pickup ring is the more standard Gibson style, not the "oversized" rings they started using around then (my May '86 custom has the oversized ring).

Sweetness, I love that body. To bad about the kahler though.

Very nice! Congrats! ...And the Kahler is OK by me!! I always thought that the oversized rings started in 87-88??

Nope, again my May '86 strat (which is on the books and unmolested) has the oversized ring, and so did the '86 import charvel model series.

And I like the Kahler too!

FYI another interesting thing I just noticed -- this guitar doesn't have the brushed aluminum backplate. It's some kind of plastic it seems (thick though, not the cheap import kind).

I have a May 1986 Soloist that is stock and has a Gibson size ring (it is exactly like the one pictured on your guitar). The tuners on it are transitional type that have the San Dimas style "90 Degree" or "6 o'clock" mounting screw tab and white Jackson logo screened on the back. The control plate is the black anodized aluminum style.

I almost bid on that guitar, but chose to buy the Coors Light Soloist instead.

Actually it appears the Dimarzio was not the original pickup (at least it looks like there was a previous pickup installed). There's also something wrong with it.... its resistance reading is like 100KOhm and it sounds like ass!

The J100 XL's are remarkably hot for single coils, and sound real nice too. I don't think they made J100XL's back in '86 (can anyone confirm?), so I'm guessing these also aren't original.

I'm happy to report that as long as you avoid the broken humbucker, this guitar REALLY screams... can't wait to try it with a working hum!

I am pretty sure my Soloist has plain J100's in it.

Aren't the larger rings for the Jackson-brand pickups? Enlighten me if I'm wrong.

My Soloist has Jackson brand pickups and small rings. I had an '85 Rhoads V that had Jackson pickups and small rings as well. Maybe they started using the large rings on the covered Jackson pickups and proceded to use them on all pickups just to standardize.

                      Makes sense, I guess.

Hmm... when I bought mine (off of the original owner) it did not have the pickup cover. But it could have had one originally I suppose. It is a Jackson J90C (which according to the log book was the stock pickup). The log book unfortunately didn't say if it was covered or uncovered.
