<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Those are finish types. Oil is a penetrating finish that offers moderate protection for the wood, but has very little friction or drag. It feels closest to unfinished while still offering some protection (from moisture). Gloss is a lacquer or poly-based spray-on finish, buffed to a hi luster like the body on most guitars. It provides mucho protection, but also can feel "sticky" and cause excessive drag. The happy medium is a satin finish. It offers the same protection as a gloss finish, with far less "drag."

Of course, if you polish a painted/gloss-coated neck just like you're supposed to, there's no "drag".

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Exactly. Why bother with tung oil? You need to apply more tung oil every once in awhile, and necks can have more of a tendency to warp from not being fully protected. High gloss or matte satin finishes are the way to go, IMO.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">True, a freshly polished gloss neck is very smooth. But ineveitably your sweat and oils will build back up into a sticky schmear again. Your personal body chemistry could have a lot to do with how frequently and severe the build up occurs. If you are gigging, the build up could be an annoyance as the drag gradually increases during the course of a tune or set. Better keep that polish and cloth nearby.

An oiled neck does require maintanence (reapplication) over the course of its life (less maintenance as time goes by), and it doesn't offer nearly the level of protection of a gloss or satin finish. Nevertheless, it feels good to a lot of people- good enough to forego the superior protection of a hard finish. There are other types of oil finishes besides tung- danish oil is a superb finish.

Personally, the satin polyester on the back of my Tom Anderson is the best feeling neck finish I've ever come across. No contest.

As an aside- A friend of mine who is a master luthier will only finish his own guitars in oil, even though he is a capable sprayer. He spent years developing a special formula and method of applying oil finishes. It actually takes him longer to apply his finish than it would to do a complete laqcuer job. His name is Froc and he co-devoloped F guitars with luthier George Furlanetto. Froc is mostly doing repair work in northern CT these days, and he is an unbelievable Jazz guitarist.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Jackson will do pretty much ANYTHING you want them to. Just call a dealer and get an order form to go over what you'd like.

Re: oiled and gloss

The easiest way for YOU to decide is to play guitars that have high gloss, satin gloss or tung, gunstock or whatever other oils, to see what you prefer.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's what I've been saying - if you polish/clean a painted/glosscoated neck there is NO DRAG. If you DON'T polish/clean an oiled neck, it will have some drag to it. You HAVE to clean the neck.

i have a les paul with gloss, strat with oil, but i never tried satin thats why im asking if satin is like the dry neck on acoustics if it is then i played them all.

Re: oiled and gloss

O.k., since we're on an oil topic here, I have a question: I'm working on a project guitar made from cocobola. I definitely want an oil finish on it. (on the body)I know tung oil takes almost 30 days to "cure". Is danish finish about the same, or does someone have another idea on oil finishing a body?

The whole thing is cocobolo? Isn't that reallllly heavy?
750xl, 88LE, AT1, Roswell Pro, SG-X, 4 others...
Stilletto Duece 1/2 Stack, MkIII Mini-Stack, J-Station, 12 spaces of misc rack stuff, Sonar 4, Event 20/20, misc outboard stuff...

Why do I still want MORE?

Well, I cut the wings off a neck-thru guitar, so just the new body wings are cocobolo, but yes, it's DAMN heavy! Sure looks good though...I'll just play it sitting down alot.
