• Soloist 1994 autograph by...

Hello there!
Only a question a simple question about my guitar value.
I've got a Soloist USA 1994 with lightning sky paint autographed by John Petrucci and Mike portnoy of Dream Theater.Do you think it give much more value to it?

Thanks
Big big Dream Theater fan...

It may to some people, but they would have to like the guitar as well. On a retail level, it is often hard to sell a guitar that is autographed as it narrows the group of people who would be interested. I have cleaned many autographs off of guitars over the years at stores I have worked in and on guitars I have bought for myself. If this were a Randy Rhoads autograph, this would be a whole other story.

What it boils down to is if you like the autographs, leave them on. If you want to play the guitar and don't like them, don't worry about cleaning them off. You aren't harming its value.

Maybe to a collector, not to a player. It is amazing how much some collector's will pay for something just because it has an autograph on it. I've seen people trying to sell entry-level Peaveys on Ebay for ridiculous amounts, just because it has Ozzy Osbourne's signature on it, for example. Often the people signing these guitars don't play the model of guitar up for auction, or aren't even guitarists, in the case of Ozzy and Mike Portnoy. I could maybe understand the collectibility of a Fender Str@t signed by Clapton or SRV, but a Yamaha signed by Malmsteen? Or a Squier signed by the dudes from Korn?

I think it doesn't add value since Petrucci does not/did not play Jackson.
If it was a Petrucci Model by Ernie Ball or Ibanez, it will be cooler and sure it wil add value.

Still, a guitar signed by Petrucci, maybe a fan of the band would buy it because of the autograph.

I've addressed this issue before... I'll reiterate.

I don't care if Jennifer Love Hewitt was naked on my bed saying I want to autograph your guitar. I don't want anyone scribbling stuff on a guitar I own or I am going to buy, regardless of who it is.

I own an a Jackson that was owned by one of my favorite artists of all time, it was used on a few albums and a tour, and I declined on having him autograph it. I think it's great that he owned it, but probably wouldn't have bought it if he'd scribbled all over it.

Just my opinion...

edit: Personally I think it detracts from overall desirability... sure if it was one of Hendrix's original strats, or one of Rhoads original models, sure why not, but I wouldn't want it that way.

it is worth what a a 1994 soloist is worth in the same condition. Unfortunately John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy and Dream Theater are not huge super stars that the average Joe knows about and they are both still alive... the autographs don't mean a thing.

I had a Sheehan/Vai signed JS700. I had to clean off the signatures just to get it to sell.

Well, I'd do just about anything she wanted, but if she got near my guitars with a sharpie or paint pen, her bottom would be quite red.
