Re: Good pickups for a usa jackson

I am in the same situation myself...

The JB in the bridge of my USA kelly sounds thin and does not have the punch I want.

currently torn between a Custom, Distortion or a BL l-500XL

Iwill have to take a look at the Adder pickups...

      Guys,

A few days ago I said I would post a review (and hopefully some sound clips) of the Adder Plus pups in a day or so. I've been swamped at work, and my wife and son are ill. I'll try to get to this over the weekend when I hopefully get some chill time.

not hearing the APC pups, so i can't speak about them. but i will have to say, the duncan distortion has the metal sound more so than the emgs. basically they are like the emg's with a tad more bite to them. i'd like to hear the apc's, though.

I use the Duncan Custom or the (also Duncan) Dimebucker in the bridge of most of my Jacksons, and have had great results so far

                thread resurrection...

i'm wondering about two of Seymour Duncan's pickups are they any good?

particularly the SH-8 Invader and the SH-10 Full Shred? aka the ones that come with the WR-1 Warrior. how do they sound compared to the SH-4 JB or the ones that usually come with the RR-1, KE-2 and KV-2?

I think ya can look at a bunch of reviews for pickups at Harmony Central as well... but we know how those can be.

I reccomend the Duncan Distortion. Its pretty beefy and really nice harmonics.

Most USA Jacksons have an ebony fretboard and althought it is an abolute joy to play on it can make certain pickups sound like trebly thin trash IMO. The JB and Distortion are great pickups but they just dont' go well with the ebony IMO. I prefer a pickup with the treble slightly toned down and mids up for more punch because the ebony will give you the top end cut you need.

I prefer the Dimarzio Super3....kinda like the Super Distortion but not as boomy in the bottom end.

The Invader is totally different, beefy is one word to describe it (James used it on MOP btw)

Edit: The SD Distortion is like the JB, but with more output/distortion

The Duncan Distortion I find has less low end than the JB, and is not quite as high output as it's name implies.

Really? To me the Distortion has significantly more low-end than a JB. I guess it's all a matter of perception. I find the Distortion to be very evenly balanced compared to most other Duncans. And no, it's not that hot compared to EMGs or Live Wires or such, but more so than a JB or a Custom.

Of course, the height that you set the pickup from the strings has a LOT to do with the sound you get. The Distortion in my new (to me) Soloist is a little too high right now, so it's a bit too much. I'll set it back down a fraction when I get home tonight to regain a little clarity.
