• SL1 playabilty & sound verses PC-1

I'm trying to plan my new tax ride-offs for next year and just wondering how the 2 axes hold up next ot each other.

I currently have a SL1 and have always wanted a pc-1 but the problem was that they didn't make them left handed. Well since Fender took over they do make them now so I can order 1 and I bet that it would take about a year.

Anyway do they play as well as the soloist? There is nothing that compares to the neck of the soloist. The sound of the SL1 is OK, it holds up with my Axis and FLying V but does the PC1 do well in the sound area or is the big deal about it the sustainer?

I have a soloist and a PC-1. To me there is no comparison...the soloist is easier to play. I love my PC-1, but find the neck to be MUCH thicker than the soloist, almost like a baseball bat. The PC-1 also has a very different sound...I don't know how to explain it. It's just not as mellow with its natural EQ. I think it's all that maple. BTW, I swapped the stock dimarzio (which I normally like) for a duncan. The PC-1 is a great guitar, and I do play it live more than the soloist (I like to wrestle and dig in when I'm on stage). Oh yeah, the sustainer is useless as far as I'm concerned. To me (my needs, not Jackson's or PC's) the purpose of the PC-1 was to have a guitar as pretty as a PRS, but still be a Floyd equipped rock guitar. In that case it's fantastic (sorry, but I don't like pointy heads with pretty wood). *edited to add info*

yes...not in a really bad way, but enough where I need to re-EQ my amp.

It all depends on your preferences.

I'll leave the bolt-on vs. neck-through thing to the side, as that's obvious. Some like one or the other, I like both.

I'll disagree with Joe on the PUs, though. I prefer Dimarzios. I think the Super3 is a great HBr. The HS2 in the middle is so-so average. The sustainer is cool, useful, a nice new tool, but not anything you can't live without. As a neck PU, though, I think it gives a pretty cool hard-edged distorted bluesy tone.

I definitely prefer the SLs neck profile. Mind you, I like to PC1s too, but just not as much. I just prefer thinner, flatter necks. Then again, the PC1's is oiled, which many folks prefer. And I'm a big fan of maple fretboards, period.

Tone-wise, the PC1 is chunkier. More Les Paul-ish, say, than the Soloist. Mahogany with a maple cap, 'ya know? Maple neck, though. ...Actually, in some ways (neck profile, woods, etc.), I think the PC1 is Jackson's attempt to marry some of the LP/PRS features with a Dinky. It's a pretty unique and cool set-up, IMHO. I love `em both.

The Soloist is likely the better guitar. I have a PC-1 USA neck mated to a 1989 Dinky and that neck is very cool. Slightly thicker than the Soloist neck you'll notice a definite change in profile. But it's still a comfy and fast neck. By and large, the Duncan pickups of the Soloist are better than the Dimarzio's in the PC-1. This too is a matter of opinion, but the consensus is that. Playability is equal, the 24 fret bolt on still offers ease of upper fret access, but the neck through is more luxorious. Most on the JCF find the Sustainer to be limiting, and can only use it on a song or two at the most.
"Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."

Re: SL1 playabilty & sound verses PC-1

I guess I'm in the minority. I too have a PC1 and SL1 and use both guitars equally live. But, if I could only take one with me, it would be the PC1. I get way more tone variations out of my PC1 vs the Soloist. I prefer the deeper tones, my guess is the Mohagany. Yes, the neck profiles are different, and as the previous post mentioned the difference in bolt on vs neck thru is not a big deal for me. I can go back and forth with no problem. I guess it boils down to what you want out of your guitar. I consider my PC1 my "overall" guitar. It gets me the biggest bang for my buck. Again, this is just my 2 cents worth. Either way you can't go wrong, PC1 or SL1.

Oh, and BTW, I don't use the sustainer either.
