• SL2H + EMG combinations

ok, I've got my next guitar picked out (for sure this time )

I'm getting a SL2H w/ the Graveyard finish, now for the question.......

Should I throw in the same EMGs as my KE2TD (81/85) or should I try an 85/60 combo? I've always wanted to try this combo, anyone had any experience with this combo?

Remember that this will be on a guitar tuned to B

thanx in advance guys

This is a DK1, but this will pretty much sum up how it looks

That'll be pretty sweet!! I've got the 85b/60n combo in one of my Dinkies that's poplar, and it's my favorite! I also have a Hamer with two chrome 81s, and I did have an alder Dinky with 81b/85n. If I were to go with the 81 and 85 again, I'd switch them to the 85b and 81n. It just sounds better to me that way with the brighter pup in the neck. The Hamer sounds a little more chunky with the 81 in the bridge since it's a mahogany body. The cool thing about EMGs is you can switch them out with the quick-disconnect clips to see what you like better in which position.

this may sound goofy. but after buying my DK-1, I actually prefer its neck profile over my SL-2 and SL-1. I do prefer the 81-85 combo which I have in my sl-2 and DK-1. I plan on buying another DK-1 asap. but I'm gonna go with shattered glass or if I go custom I'll get the grid graphic. BTW if you wanna see a pic of my DK-1 just look in the jackson catalog. Re: SL2H + EMG combinations

I had used an EMG 81 in a couple of my guitars for a couple of years and just recently put an 85 in the bridge position. I have to admit that I like it a lot better than the 81, it just sounds beefier. Oh, and it's a mahogany body.

I have a Soloist with a 85n/81b combo with an SPC control. I like that combo alot. I would like to try an 85 in the bridge at some point, but am in no rush as I really like the sound of the 81. I have two other Jacksons with 81's in in the bridge and they all sound great. I guess it is up to you to try the different combos and decide what you personally prefer.

Well, I like the 81 and the 85 in the bridge, but it all depends on the woods and teh style of playing. I will use Alder as an example since it is the most neutral of woods. For heavy palm muting or chords I prefer the 85, but for clear and soloing and serious pinch harmonics I prefer the 81. if the good lord said I had to pick 1 of them for the rest of my life, I would pick the 85, I play mostly rithym. I don`t like neck or middle pickups at all, but I know most do. If I had my drithers, I would only have 1 humbucker guitars Jack.

hmmm......

Maybe what I'll do is just order it with the 85 in the bridge and 81 in the neck, then switch them if I need to!

I could always sell off the 81 if I don't like the way it sounds in the neck.

Re: SL2H + EMG combinations

Heres the combo I love. I run a duncan invader in the bridge and a marzio hummer in the neck. I had a pair of invaders, but the neck one was too tinty for my taste. I like that warm low sound for sweet picking, that the hummer puts out. Thats in my Charvel 475 deluxe. Which is similar to a SL2H.
I'll know really soon.(how similar) After waiting since April, for my new lefty SL2H in ltg sky, I finally got word it'll ship 1st week in December. Mery Christmas to me

Re: SL2H + EMG combinations

I'd really like to try out those Adder Plus pickups based on a few raved reviews on the JCF, but I recently dropped enough money on EMGs for my electric guitars before I ever heard of Adder Plus. Maybe sometime soon though.

I personally decided to go for an unlikely EMG combo due to availability on Ebay. I found an EMG-89 and and EMG-85 around the same time frame on Ebay, so I just bought both and took an chance with them. I put the EMG-89 in the neck and the EMG-85 in the bridge of my alder-bodied KE3, which was always my best-playing guitar, and holy crap, it is has really improved the clarity, sustain, and crunch of the guitar. The volume knob is a push-pull pot to activate the single-coil mode of the neck EMG-89, which makes it a little more versatile. Clean tones with these two hot humbuckers are surprisingly pristine and very clear/warm. Honestly, if I were to order a custom shop Jackson, I'd get the same specs as I currently have in this KE3, but I feel I don't need to drop that amount of green since I pretty much already have my dream guitar!

The not-so-good news: I got an EMG-81, EMG-S, EMG-S set for my RG560 along with the EMG-EXG guitar expander control replacing the tone control, and I haven't been as happy with the overall distortion tone of these ceramic pickups. I don't know if ceramic pickups are generally stale like this, since I've only played alnico pickups before this, including the alnico EMGs in my KE3. I do like the clean single coil tones I'm getting out of that guitar, so I think I will swap the bridge EMG-81 out for an EMG-85.

How would that mastertone
supa phat or whatever "holy grail of metal" high output model sound in a kv1?

Would it go from old school Megadeth-ish to In Flames/Arch enemey sounding stuff?

Would I actually have to buy two, or could I get the bridge one, and use a EMG in the neck?

Anyone have any input about this pickup?
