• Weird SL2H Custom???

I have a 2001 SL2H here with an R5 Nut and the biggest neck I've found on a soloist. Here's the skinny...

SL2H - Dual EMG's with push / pull on the knobs
All Chrome hardware
Ebony with fins
Huge neck
Standard graphic
U-something serial number

Is there any chance this was a custom shop guitar because of the chrome and the wide neck? I've had a few USA Select guitars, but nothing with a neck this big.

Obviously it's not a custom with the U0 serial number. Chances are it's really an SL2, not the SL2H. Is the trem the JT-580? I'm leaning towards thinking so. Probably is, and the pickups were originally Armstrongs, so chances are the nut was replaced with the R5 at that time too. Post a few pics, we can look at it better...

Joe, the SL2 had no inlays.

No, it's not an SL2. This has inlays, binding, original Floyd equipped, etc.

I have a diamond plate Kelly - definately a custom shop guitar, but it has the same U type serial number - not UO - and it was a Custom Shop piece.

In 2001, did Jackson allow the options like I've described above on USA Select models, or just custom shops?

It is not uncommon for Jackson to spit out an odd-ball without it being a custom shop, especially around a NAMM show.

I'd think the chrome hardware and the two EMG 89s would be something that someone did aftermarket.

They made a version of the SL2 that had fins. I think they called it the SL2S or something like that.

Yeah, they're fairly rare, but Jackson does throw out a few full custom and/or non-standard jobs with USA Select serial numbers here and there. The diamond plate Kellys were certainly prime examples.

And Soloist1 is correct, there was an SL2 version with fins. It either had no binding or black binding. ..Can't remember which.

Re: Weird SL2H Custom???

The 1996 SL2 did indeed have sharkfins, and has been noted was designated the SL2S. However, these guitars did not have binding, although some argue they had black binding, they surely didn't have the traditional binding. Brett, how about a picture to help us out here, everyone's just guessing right now...

Joe, there is no arguement they had binding, they had black binding. And even if it was an SL2, or SL2s, having owned both, the necks were thinner than the soloists I have now.

I've only seen three SL2's in my time. One I personally owned, a 1996 GMG SL2. No binding, it was a no frills Soloist. Did have an ebony board though, and side dot markers...
