Re: Honest Opinions Needed

Dude, i was also in shock when I coulden`t get $1500 for 1 of only 2 Custom Shop Archtop solists made in 1993. She is really decked out with quilt top, mahogany body, non-recessed trem, etc. This guitar cost between $3000 and 3300 street price wehn new. It makes no sense, and I did try Ebay even, yet it is made 10 times better than any gibson I have ever handles, and that includes Class 5 models. Jack.

I feel your pain

Anyhoo, I'll address a few things that I personally think decrease the $$ value on this particular guitar:
-The nut. No matter how good it is, or how rare, it looks like a large hunk of plastic. You might get more interest if you can swap it out for a chrome Floyd nut.
-The top. It's just not active (or it doesn't photograph well), and it's one color. If it was a more figured wood and/or had a burst of some sort, it'd have more interest, but not a whole lot more.
-Bolt-on neck. Most people are still under the misguided impression that bolt-on neck construction is inferior to neckthrough.
-The logo. Most people are still under the misguided impression that a Jackson USA with a real maple top is inferior to an Ibanez or PRS with a photoflame top.

Believe me, I know how it is when you've got what you perceive to be a rare gem in a sea of rubberstamps, and everyone wants rubberstamps

yeah that nut is whack. i remember you posted pictures of this guitar a while ago and someone said that the nut was a hack job because the jackson custom shop wouldn't have made a cut for a locking nut if they weren't going to install one.

get a locking nut.

This is a classic case of intrinsic versus market value. This is what has me interested in Jackson guitars in particular. I can buy a guitar that would cost $3000-4000 to replicate the quality and uniqueness for under a grand.

Again, thanks for all the opinions.

Eesh, so many people are getting their panties twisted over the nut. I know I can easily slap on a Schaller chrome locking nut but the point is that it is not needed. It does not detune.

So if I slap on a locking nut, will someone give me $1500?

On a brighter note, I found out today that my '57 Strat reissue is worth 3x more than I thought, so I guess in the guitar cosmos it sort of balances out. Almost. Nah. Maybe if I put a Fender sticker over the Jackson logo...

I think the nut looks pretty cool, actually. It's different, something I've never seen, but who cares? You don't need a locking nut with a Floyd if you've got locking tuners like Sperzel or Schaller. It gets the job done. It's a sweet guitar regardless.

If your gonna keep the guitar, leave the nut. If your gonna sell, put on the locking nut. Stubbornness about keeping it will only hurt the sale.

Re: Honest Opinions Needed

I think most of the salient points have already been stated, but here's my thoughts:

1. The nut scares people, because most Floyd users want a Floyd nut.

2. The Rosewood fretboard w/sharkfins has a strong import Charvel connotation (not that there's anything wrong with that) that drives down the perceived value compared to a guitar with an ebony board. Charvel 750xl's sell for less than the very similar Archtop Soloist Pros, probably for the same reason.

3. All non-San Dimas Jacksons have crappy resale value, and bolt-ons are the worst for that. Not a rational thing, but that's the way it is. Personally, I've benefitted from this, as I've never bought a new Jackson and have been able to get into some sweet guitars even with my poor financial situation. But if you buy a new Jackson, you just have to be aware that you'll never get your money back out of it, regardless of how nice it is. And that is a nice guitar.

Dudes,
That's a wilkinson nut if i'v ever seen one. Guy's, remember that they are satin finish.... hence the plastic look (probably due to the lighting).

I have to agree with the nut/bridge mismatch..... this probably eliminates 90% of the buyers.

Also, most retailers will sell you a c/s jackson at about 40% off that retail price.

Interesting guitar though... I would look to the telecaster freaks to sell it.
