• The time has come!

I dont know if anybody will remember this. When I first joined the forum it was to get info on my RR. I also decided at about this time to have it refinished. Thanks to Sully, the time to get it done has come.

Here are a few pics Id like to share.

    This how she looked before.

This is when I closed the case this morning to get her ready to ship.

And last but not least. This is how I want her to look when I see her again.

Thanks to everyone involved with this one. The Custom Shop Generator in the recourses section really helped me out a lot on my decision.

I used to own a gun metal grey RR1, and it is an awesome color. The black bevels will look great on it!

That's going to look great, but I have to say the rebel flag look was really cool, too!

Had it been a descent job I would have probably left the graphic on it. Unfortunately it was very poorly done. I cant wait to get this one back as my house will seem so empty without her.

How does the pros manage to refinish a bound, painted neck? I mean, do they sand down the neck? How do they avoid damaging the binding? Just mask it? And how do they get a smooth transition from new paint to binding?
I read this as if sully will do the refin. Sully, let me in on this - how is it done properly?

RR_1525, helluva good choice on the layout of your future RR Just one note: bound headstock and black body bevels? That's unusual but it looks cool allright.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">getting around binding is just a masking issue. if any of the paint gets under the tape, the overspray scrapes off very easily with a razor blade. it's masked when painted, but the tape is removed for the clearcoat. as far as getting a nice transition between paint and binding, you have to mask it carefully, but the clearcoat takes care of it. i have a firebird here that's getting repainted soon, and the paint overlapped the binding a little bit, perhaps a 32nd of an inch.

I think your color choices are right on. I like the way black binding contrasts with bright headstock colors, but I don't like the way it gets lost next to an ebony board. White binding just goes great with any colors and fret boards.

Another trick I have learned painting binding is to seal the masked binding with a quick coat of clear the same day you are going to spray color. Let it dry two hours then paint the color coat and remove the tape about an hour later. This has eliminated that color bleed under the tape. The key is to get the tape off while the paint is still kind of soft so it doesn't chip up. Looking at the 80's Jacksons shows they usually had flaws in the masking of the binding. I see primer coats and bleed through on most guitars from that era.
