• PC-1 / different headstocks

I don't know if this has been asked before (didn't find a thread). I just noticed that the PC-1 models from the past have a different headstock than the current ones. Here's a pic from my 1997 PC-1 and a newer model.
Does anybody know when they changed the headstock?

Somehow I like the new ones better

Yeah, I like the new ones better. The older ones are to 'teleish' and I hate those heads.
Sorry I cant help you

I think that they took the old design again (1997 on your picture) for the new ones if we look at the actual catalog :

What do you mean, "I don't believe in God"? I talk to him every day.

Hmm...looks like it. Then what is the new 2002 headstock in busdrivers post?

ok, meanwhile I think there is no "old" and "new". Just checked Brooks' website with tons of PC-1 and found only one picture of a PC-1 with the different headstock

The dates are definitely reversed in that first post. While they're both psuedo-stratheads, the "original" PC1 headstock is the same as on the mid-90s Charvel San Dimas Reissues (the bottom one). I'm not sure exactly when they changed to the "newer" style, but it was soon after the mid-90s. PC-1s have been like the top photo for many years now.

I never understood the reasoning for the change, though. The plot got even stranger when Jackson re-used the "original" style when the import Charvels were introduced a couple of years ago. Not sure why it was OK to use on the Charvels, but not on Jackson's PC-1 line. And, right after the Fender buyout, some prototype USA Charvels were shown at NAMM with the original-style headstock. ...Weird, huh?

Forgive me if this has been posted before.
Some differences that I have noticed:

The necks now have a flamey as opposed to a quilty look.

They are painting the backs of the guitars the same color as the fronts.

Headstocks seem to have a plain look as opposed to the flamey look.

Damn! I loved the look of the unfinished sides and back. Especially on the Chlorine models!

--> The quilted boards were sometimes too "soft" which led to frets becoming loose.

They are painting the backs of the guitars the same color as the fronts.
--> I think they started doing this in late 2002. The Au Natural and Solar still have the natural stain.

Headstocks seem to have a plain look as opposed to the flamey look.
-->Only Phil Collen's PC-1's have the flame fingerboard for the whole neck. Production PC-1's just have the flame for the 1/4" board. The neck is plain old quarter-sawn maple.

first post here...I think its in line in this thread...

what's the production total of the PC-1s with the MATCHING headstocks? I've seen a couple the same color as the bodies

thanks,
Chris

Well, I'm guessing Phil got the headstock he wanted when the PC1 was first introduced - the "original" style. I kind of doubt he's the one who asked for the change. I suspect Jackson decided to move it further away from Fender's strathead, and not ask for trouble. ...Why they moved back on other models, but not the PC1, is the strange part.

As to the "original" style reappearing because Jackson was just reusing parts, sorry Chuckster and Busdriver, but IMHO that's probably not the answer here....

- Recall that when re-introduced, the Charvel line was import only. So they'd be using leftover USA necks on import Charvels? Sorry, but I find that pretty unlikely. If there were any leftover necks, they'd be used on USA PC1s instead.

- Besides, recall that the import PC3 was already in production at that time. Even if Jackson wanted to use up leftover USA necks with the "original" style headstocks, they had plenty of time to do so on the import PC3 instead of the Charvels. It was already being produced well before the Charvels were brought online.

- The prototype USA Charvels shown at NAMM '03 were 22 fret'rs. The PC1 is 24. Obviously, these necks weren't leftover PC1 parts, either.

...Yeah, yeah. I'm being a screw counter. Whatever.
