I know I'll take flack but I think the JB is a horrible choice for an ebony boarded guitar. THere are better well match pickups out there that scream but are much beefier and chunkier without being shrill.

With that being said, I love the JB in my Kramer.

        <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Agree. I pulled the JB out of my SL2H ASAP.

It's not just ebony - I had one in my maple-boarded USA Dinky, and it was very weak and trashy-sounding - and yes, I adjusted it up and down, checked all the solder joints, etc etc - it just sucks as a bridge pickup.
Everyone keeps comparing it to the Distortion (output) and the Custom (tone) but the JB as a bridge pickup is a seriously bad idea.
I still cannot believe they use those in the RR1 instead of a Distortion.

I won't say there aren't better pickups out there. I kinda lean towards the EMG 81 as my fav, but I can get some really great tone from my JB and like it for some different flavor.

Anyway, I think I will go for the litte 59 for either the neck and middle pickup. The question is, should I buy the neck version or the bridge version to go with the custom in the bridge?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">As I mentioned before, I had a little 59 neck and a little 59 bridge (neck and middle positions respectively) matched up with a JB. This seemed to be a very well balanced combination. There is no reason why they wouldn't match well with a Custom as well. I think that people tend to use bridge model pickups in the middle position as most seem to like a higher output there. It all has to do with balance.

Answering questions like these is like trying to debate what the best flavor of ice cream is. There is no best flavor of ice cream. That is not a "fact" that can be verified. We all have our own favorite flavors, and that is a matter of individual taste. It's all opinions and preferences. I hope we're not inappropriately give newbies that impression.

The more I look and with the tone wizard, it seems the custom custom is the pick up to choose here. it has a lower output though. does anyone think this is a good choice?

If you play through a high gain amp, then a lower output pickup won't negatively affect anything. It will actually allow more of the guitar's tone to come through. I've played a Custom custom in a Hamer Monaco (damn I want one of those!) through a Peavey 5150 combo and it sounded great. Honestly, I have never had a bad Duncan pickup. Having said that, there are some that do certain jobs better. And when I say better, I mean to me, my opinion. Try a Duncan, if you don't like it, you have 21 days to exchange it for another one. Assuming you buy a new one of course.
