Re: UPS fucked up JCF-01-13

Thanks for all the support, guys. Yes, Dave and I know that this is going to be a hard nut to crack, but when I talked to him, he seemed very determined and I am greatful for that.

To answer the question, YES it is cracked, just not broken all the way off. Can it be fixed? Of course, but the premium I paid for this does not warrant a fixed guitar. So, we will have to see. I will keep you all updated. Again, thank you all for the support.

Re: UPS fucked up JCF-01-13

I've shipped a number of guitars and make extra damn sure that I pack properly.

If you file a USPS claim, they take the product when you file it.

With UPS and FedEx, I'm sure they would take it when they issue you money. The people paying the claim will want something.

Anyways, that sucks to hear. GMW will fix it and you won't be able to tell, I would think.

UPS can be tough to deal with when it comes to damage like that. Unless there's physical damage to the outside of the box they may deny the claim stating that the cardboard box was "previously used" and there was "insufficiant packaging material" used. I've had this happen many times to me over the years.

Your best bet is to try and get money from UPS to be used to cover the repair. If you want to try to get them to cut you a check in any amount over $100.00, they will more than likely take the guitar from you and ship it to one of their inspection stations for review. When the inspector comes, explain that you want it "repaired" and nothing more. Obviously you don't want them taking the guitar.

As for FedEx, DHL and the USPS, they're all a pain in the ass to get claim money out of. I've alternated between all of them over the last 15 years. I find UPS is the best.

It doesnt matter to UPS about outside box damage so dont even think that!!!!!
I'm still fighting a $6K + claim and the box has forklift holes in it along with tears, dents, dirt, wet stains ect.UPS insurance is insurance fraud and unless you start legal recourse they dont do anything but deny the claim for "insufficient packing". I have had 3 guitars that were shipped to Me severly damaged and they do the same BULLSHIP every time. I use usps now and the guitar usually gets there in 2 days and the box isnt even dented or dirty. It cost probably 60% more than ground but you new guitar isnt GROUND when You get it. To me its worth it not to deal with UPS alone.
Good Luck!!

I use FedEx exclusively. In fact, for the most part, I ship overnight or 2nd day air. Yea, it costs more, but I'm too fucking old to get headaches wondering if two assclowns are playing catch with my stuff. When you send stuff ground, just think how many times the instrument changes trucks.

I have had great luck shipping USPS, in fact I shipped this guitar to Dave using USPS, packed like ft knox tho

I have had 3 broken headstocks delivered to me via UPS ..I wouldn't use them to ship a guitar pick.

Scott, sorry that you and Dave have to go through all this BS. She really is a sweet guitar and hopfully with a good repair job it will be unnoticed.

Re: UPS fucked up JCF-01-13

The only problem I've had shipping guitars with the USPS is they have a regulation saying that boxes can only be 35 inches long or 64 total inches aint it? I know before when I sold my PRS they wouldnt let me ship it.

Wow, that really sucks, man!

I have to say, I've never had a problem with UPS ground-shipped guitars, either sending or receiving. I suppose sending 2nd-day air (by whatever shipper) would reduce the amount of handling... Other than that, a rare guitar is almost worth taking a vacation to go pick up in person. I'd say "buy an airline ticket", but then you have to trust the baggage handlers, and that's where the Samsonite Apes go who get rejected by UPS...

That sucks , I wouldn't want that to happen to any guitar, but that was a special axe . Those morons should take pride and care in their work. Best of Luck.

This thread needs to be sent to the public relations department at UPS. Better yet, let me do some research on who the local top dogs are and I'll see if I know them. I'd love to have lunch with a UPS official and then unload on their ass for an hour or so.

If it's really valuable/precious, you could always buy an airline ticket for the guitar. That's what Steve Howe used to do for his trusty ES-175--he would buy a ticket for it under the name "Mr. Gibson", since he wasn't willing to ever have it out of his sight while on tour. And guess what, he's still got the guitar in perfect condition all these years later.

Rumor has it that Howe actually once bought a ticket for "Mr. Gibson" on the Concorde at the cost of many thousands of dollars. In the recent Yes documentary DVD, he sort of claims he doesn't remember doing that, but...

you pulled that story after 9-11? I find that hard to beleive.
The opening scene in Ace ventura comes to mind.

but that really sucks, i hope everything gets worked out and you dont get screwed. DONT LET THEM TAKE THE GUITAR, when you get it back it will be powder.

Sorry bout the damage.... I bought a Firebird from Dave Ingram last year and carried it on the plane myself just to guarantee that it wouldn't get fucked up by the airline. I had to bullshit the pilot and tell him that I was the in-flight intertainment....It worked.
