  • how can you tell if your pot is damaged?

im afraid i damaged my pot while soldering on my new PU...like it got overheated or something..

because my guitar sounds pretty weird now, with a way too loose and fuzzy low end and the the overall sound kinda lacks definition

and yes im positive the wiring is correct...

yeah i know, but what are the "symptoms" of a damaged volume pot?

i dont wanna replace it, if that's not the problem

Lack of output at certain positions is the most common problem. Scratchiness when turning, fuzzy output or low gain. Mainly, look for uneveness in volume when turning it. A volume pot should swell cleanly from nothing to full, without dropouts or noise.

BTW: I'm not couting crackling as noise, because that is an indication of a dirty pot, not a damaged one.

i guess it is damaged after all...

how ahard is it to change a pot?
should i get a pro to do it, or is it as easy as changing PU's?

If you changed the pups yourself, a volume pot should be no problem.....

If you can change the PU you should be able to change the pot. It just requires soldering abilities and possibly a wiring diagram.

Please take care when soldering pots. If you leave the iron on the pot too long, you will damage it, burning through it at wherever it is in it's range. The symptoms of a burned pot will be a dead spot where you get little to no volume. On and off, as quickly as possible, is the rule when soldering pots.
