Re: Guitars you own but dont play...

I play most of them, but a few of the older Jacksons don't see live gigs anymore. I have 18 others I can abuse on stage

I'm reading all that and I ask myself: would I want to have a Ferrari in the garage and never drive it? Hell no! I don't have to push it to its limits, but not drive it at all? What's the purpose of having it?
I think it's the same with guitars.

To the author of the thread:

Fret wear shouldn't be problem, especially not a problem if you live abroad (in USA), where the Jackson/ESP HQ are. You can always send the guitar to them and they'll change your out-weared frets. You can even contact some of the fellas that know how to do it.

I live in a very small country in the mid Europe, and here's one guy that changed my frets, I can say, flawlessly. It felt like playing new guitar.
The metaphor is that if I can find a support and service, you can find thousands of them, so bitching about not playing because of fret wear, because it's silly.

I wouldn't object your statements if you were saying that your guitar keeps cracking and fallin apart when you're playing it.
In the end, you can play your guitar and have it in mint condition for 100 years if you like. You just have to treat her right.

well i gotta say i recently bought a 85 kelly bass with a kahler trem and it has only one nick on it. i don't play it much just cause i'm not used to it yet (i usually play p bass shaped basses )but i'm working on it! i find it's about the feel in my hands that dictates how much i play a bass. it is by far the cleanest/most valuable bass i have but that is not why i don't play it as much as my custom shop. the custom shop bass JUST FITS ME BETTER (for now anyway!)i've got 20 basses and play them all at one time or another but there's always going to be a few favs that get more time( like my s/d student, which is my #2 bass)

so are those 1970-80's mapled necked LP's rare or were they in production for a time?

i read an article on Wylde's Grail and they made it seem like it was a one-of-a-kind deal. but great thread, and Wonderful LP with the maple board . i didn;t honestly expect to see something like that.

Ok, this is just MHO...I have a 1995 Fender Strat Plus (lace sensors, LSR nut etc.) was IT for me for years...I bought an Ibanez RG350DX, and a BC Rich Body art series JR V, and...a RX10D. All I play now is the Jackson. The body style fits me perfectly, it has great tone, and it feels "right". But...if it's a blues/country tone I am searchin for I still play the Fender. The Ibanez and BC R haven't been played since the purchase of the Jackson. And never will be again. I am a Jackson Junkie LOL..

I play them all...I don't collect for the sake of collecting but I can understand why people wouldn't play a one of kind but my mindset is if I pay the cash for a guitar I'm sure as hell gonna play it

I play mine based on Mojo. If I like it I play it.
I hardly ever play my chlorine sl-2. not because it's rare. Just because I have other guitars I like to play more. I got my Les paul new in '86 and have just hammered it over the years. I still play it regularly though. My absolute favorite one to play is my Graveyard DK-1 catalog guitar. Which is also my my favorite guitar all around. That thing has monster tone and freaking shreds to boot. I know its not rare but I just dig owning one of the coolest guitars actually used in THE coolest Jackson catalog ever. I was lucky enough to aquire the silver black dragon DK-1 that was at the same NAMM show. but I just can't put down the Grave yard.

I agree with most of you to play the damn things. Now, it's totally up to the owner and if you can afford to do that, that's fine. My first true collector piece will be Big Red but I'll definitely be playing it. I paid for it, I'm playing it!! Granted, I won't beat it, but it will be played

I bought a Gibson Zakk Wylde Les Paul Custom & there is "NO WAY" I would just let it set in the case & never play it....how ever I am not going to take to a gig in a club somewhere either but I will play the hell out of it @ home or in the studio. On the other hand I play my PC1 all of the time,at gigs,in the studio & @ home....it shows it to but thats what I bought it for was to play.I waited for a year & a 1/2 while it was being built to get it & so by the time I got it I wasn't going to sit around worring if I was going to scratch it or put a ding on it.Since I bought it ,I bought 2 more pc1's & love them. The thing is....I don't think a Les Paul is a player friendly guitar....it is hard to play fast on the higher frets to me......& my Pc1's just feel comfortable & fit me better.

I´ve played every guitar I´ve ever had. Granted, I´ve never owned anything more collectable than a Players choice Collen Archtop...but on the other hand that one has been my main player for the last year.

I can definitely understand why some extremely revered and unique guitars that are old and full of history "shouldn´t" be played, but I don´t think I would ever buy one of those. Sure, guitars are beautiful works of art...but anything the customshop can reproduce, like that diamondplate Kelly, should be played like there´s no tomorrow.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Exactly. I don't own anything that I won't pull out and play at least on occasion but it's more driven by the tone/feel I'm looking for at the time than any desire to keep some of them mint.
