question about the Rhoads

ok. I have an 89 RR Valley of Lost Souls and it has a recessed floyd, but its raised up alot since the fretboard is at an angle to the body.

my friend's 2002 or 2003 RR1 doesnt have an angled body/neck design, so the floyd is flush with the body.

when did they stop doing this angled back neck/body design, and why did they stop?

I think the "guitar players" of the 90s wanted low action and thin necks so they could hold a barre chord.
IIRC the recess route is different on the older customs. It's not fully recessed like on RR1s.
