Re: Dinky and Soloist Differences

just look at the damn picture... you can clearly see that the dinky on the left is smaller than the soloist. there's less wood on the back, behind the floyd
You can't play no muthfuggin' arpeggios on a tuba...

There is no debate, just misunderstanding.

Dinky bodies are the SAME SIZE and shape as Soloists. But there are slightly different shapes for 22 fret bodies and 24 fret bodies.

The above mid-90s DK1 has 22 frets and, hence, the shorter & slimmer horns. The current DK1 (and Soloists, for that matter) has 24 frets, and the more elongated horns.

So 22 fret Dinky = 22 fret Soloist. And 24 fret Dinky = 24 fret Soloist. Same bodies depending on the number of frets, respectively. 'nuff said.

Let me add to the debate. Look at this pic of my USA DK1 and my two import dinkys. The DK1 is slimmer. Makes the import dinkys look like strats.

Then i ask again, as I have in the past, why my Custom shop 22 fret soloist was larger than my 22 fret dinkys, and why my 24 fret soloist are larger than my 24 fret dinkys were...

Every time it´s been said, I´ve posted the same pictures (which unfortunately no longer exist thanks to a Hard drive defect)... "the Bed Set": In each picture the solist was clearly larger than the otherwise identical Dinky underneath it, if not by much...

My point exactly, although here itr may have a little bit to do with camera angle...

And Again, if the ONLY difference between a DInky and a Soloist is Neck Thru vs. Bolt on, why are the speced as 2 different shapes on the CS form?...

Come to think of it, we now have an "ask Jackson" section, maybe we should do just that

not really.. unless the camera angle adds about an inch of wood to the back of the guitar.. where the strap buttons are

The bodies are the same size ,I had both. When you stand a dk1 and an sl2h back to back ,the headstock of the sl2h is 1/4 inch taller due to the neck sitting into the body more on a bolt-on. The 24th fret is closer to the neck pickup on the dk1 cause of being set in more. I like the necks of the dk1 better but I'm getting tired of floyds so I might grab an sl2ht.

I'm very happy with my DK1. The neck is great.

Re: Dinky and Soloist Differences

I have a DK1 and SL1 and the biggest difference is the neck profile. The neck on the Dinky is thinner and a bit wider than the Soloist. The bolted neck of the Dinky does not bother me. I am not sure why, but my fingers feel a bit cramped when playing the higher registers on the Soloist vice the Dinky.

I thought I read somewhere that the name Dinky came about because the body was slightly smaller than the Stratocaster it was patterned after.

I`m thinking changing my Soloist SL2H for a Dinky DK1 because of the neck profile and also I don`t like very much painted necks.

I compared my Model 5, Model 6, Soloist, and Dinky one long, boring day, and they all have exact same body. I literally laid them on top of one another and saw no difference, but then again, I'm comparing my 2000-era Dinky to 80s-era guitars. The picture above shows the Dinky next to the Model 5.

Kepp in mind that if you like everything but a painted neck, and you plan on keeping the guitar, then 0000 steel wool on the back of the neck will make it feel exactly the same as a satin finish neck. My Soloist (dubbed The Last Guitar I Will Ever Sell) has this mod, and it plays ten times better. The neck profile doesn't seem that big, once you can move around easier.

Re: Dinky and Soloist Differences

I heard that the name "Dinky" came from Grover himself who thought his guitar looked "Dinky" when Robbin Crosby (Ratt) strapped it on. Robbin was a fairly large dude (RIP).

Could be urban legend, tho.

BTW Noodles and Truth Guy. Nice collections! I love the blue ghost flames (have a red one myself) and a White RR is on my current GAS list.

I think the diference might be the tremlo and p/u besided the bolt-on neck on the Dinky. I would rather play a Dinky. I dont like Neck-Thru guitars, just never did. Besides the price, just got my DKMG for $600.00 for me that guitar rocks
