• Dinky and Soloist Differences

What is the main difference between a Dinky DK1 and a Soloist SL2H, I know one is bolt on and other neck-through, any others?

    DK1 - bolt-on, EMG-81&85, San Diman cavity routing ...

    SL2H - neck-thru, SD JB&Jazz, newer cavity routing

DK1 on left, SL2H on right

The DK1s have a thinner neck profile, too. And oiled vs. painted.

I think the Dinky body is slightly smaller.

Yeah, I've heard that about Dinky bodies, but I wasn't sure. Some say the Dinky is smaller than the strat and that the soloist is just a neck-thru dinky, so I don't know for sure. Never measured them. I think all guitars' shapes are going to be slightly different simply due to less or more sanding (one can really notice this when it comes to headstock shapes), so maybe that's why some think the dinky is smaller, or maybe it really is. Which one do you like the most a Dinky or a Soloist?

Wow!!! The control layout on the DK-1 is MUCH better than the SL2H, look at that glorious volume knob placement!!

                Re: Dinky and Soloist Differences

Yeah, I just noticed the volume knob placement myself. Hadn't realized that before. But on the import dinkys (like the DK2 and such), the volume knob is the same as the soloists. What's up with that?

As for which one I like the best, I just recently sold the SL2H and got the DK1 because all my other guitars were bolt-ons and I wanted a USA bolt-on So I can't really say. I loved the SL2H, but couldn't have both. I really like the EMGs, and bolt-ons are becoming my thing now too. So, while I can't say I like one better than the other, I guess I'm in a DK1 place right now. Maybe I'm evolving towards being a Charvel player.

that is the one thing I don't like about my SL2H, I always hit the volume knob with my right hand, it's irritating as all hell.

I wonder if they are all like that? I've never noticed it before but then again I've never looked side by side before...

I've seen a custom shop on ebay - he mentioned specifically about ordering it with the volume out of the way.

The late 1990s DK1s had a different shape than the current DK1s. The current has the Soloist shape, but the previous ones had slimmer horns:

Somebody posted a picture a few days ago showing a full-sized Strat, the above Dinky body style, and the current DK1 body style, and you could clearly see the middle guitar was a little smaller than the last guitar.

I think (and I could be wrong) the only reason that those mid 90's Dinkies had slimmer horns was because it's a 22 fret body vs the current DK1's 24 fret body. I think they the current DK1 and SL2H) may be the same size, but I've never compared the two.

Didn't the term Dinky refer to the body being smaller than a full size strat body?

Yeah, I thought the "Dinky Strat" term was obvious, so I left it out on purpose.

I personally don't care either way... I love my traditional "curvy" shaped guitars and slight variations on it too much to care about something as weird as a 7/8ths body size difference.

We´ve debated that here a few times, not sure to what consensus we came, though...

I agree that Dinkys are smaller physically... at least my Soloists are definitely all larger than my Dinkys.....
