• 1983 RR value?

Anyone have a realistic opinion on the value of this 1983 Jackson Randy Rhodes, serial in the RR 0120's, for a friend of mine? It is in 'player' condition, some chips and buckle rash.
It isn't for sale, BTW.

I am curious as well because I would be interested in adding an '80s Rhoads Custom to my collection sometime down the road. Do the string-thrus usually command more dollar?

Kahler Kills Koinage

Seriously, the Kahler limits the market appeal.

I've seen them go quite often for $500 to $700 depending on condition.

But frankly I don't see the sense in asking for an appraisal if it's not for sale, but that's just me

It has the original paint, tuners, knobs, frets, nut, case, but the pickups have been changed. Plays good. The Kahler is a Pat Appl. For, so I would guess it is the original trem.

My friend wanted to know what it was worth, and I said I would try to find out for him.

The last floyded customs that I've seen sold for 1800-2000 usd.
The last string thru customs that I've seen sold for 2100-2500 usd.
Students are less. 800-1700 depending on the bridge, color and condition.

I don't recall any Kahlered ones at the moment but because it's a custom and low serial I would say 1500-1700usd. Funnily the most expensive 83 RR I've seen sell so far was well over 3k and it had a kahler. But also original rhoads body and pinstripes.
They only made 294 83 RRs in total and many were for rock stars. I've also seen some that have been broken or heavily modded. So originals are VERY rare. All the ones that I have played have been absolutely killer guitars. Great fat necks.

Early 84 RRs are identical guitars yet go for lot less.

What do you guys think of the chrome Kahler/brass parts combo?
I thought it looked odd, but I noticed the Kahler was a PAF Kahler, so it is an early one.

The guitar is actually pretty lightweight and has a fairly beefy tone, which surprised me when I was noodling around with it. It plays great, but those small frets would take some getting used to.

If it were a 1983 String Thru it might bring from $1700 (Student) to $2000 for a custom. 2005 VG Price guide says $1400-$1600 depending on condition and buyer for a 1983 Kahler Rhoads and $1900 - $2000 for a 1983 custom stringthru. I agree with VG price guide on the customs, but not the Kahlers. In the the case of the Kahlers I agree with most of the Jcf replies that it would bring under $1000 because of the Kahler. If your not in a hurry go with the VG Price $1400 alittle less if the wings are chipped up.I would pay $1800 for a nice RR custom Black and Brass Repaint as long as the wing tips still had all original wood in tack. It is rare to see one of these great guitars in one piece as they came from the jump around and act crazy days!!! I have a friend of mine that had a early rhoads and I asked him what ever happened to it. He said" It's in pieces in a crate". I have a White 85 RR custom and its a reprint with all original wood on the wing tips and to me its priceless!!! Anybody??

My friends RR that was in pieces had the headstock broken off and he glued back on with this black tacky glue what a sight!! The angle of the head stock is like a les paul and is prone to break or crack when they land on the headstock(fall off stand, missed the stand because they were to messed up at the gig,AKA free drinks, people buying the band drinks, smoke breaks in the parking lot,ETC...on and on ). Check any used or older ones for cracks of repairs at the neck/headstock location.

Some of this early also were chopped to put trems on something else to look for. Home made routing, with chainsaws, yikes!!! In the days of VH dive bombing the Floyds ruled!!!

Is that Kahler branded as Kahler? Gibson had one of a similar design that said Patent Applied For as well in 84/85. If the Kahler's not factory original, that is.

Gibson versions were also designed and manufactured by APM/Kahler.
