• I saw a Jackson Schon!

I was in NYC this weekend, and while wandering around the Village, I checked out the East Village Music Store. Not too much of interest, except the first Schon guitar I've ever seen in person. The guy at the store told me that it was a 1986 Jackson-made one, the 16th one made, and that the original owner had sold it to him. I saw no reason to doubt him, since it had all the hallmarks of Jackson manufacture, including Jackson-logoed tuners and the "NS6-xxxx" serial #. Interestingly, this one had a HSS setup and an unusual Floyd-copy that I'd never seen before. The trem was clearly stock, but I had thought that all of the Schons had that unusual fixed tailpiece setup. In looking on the Web for info, I see that there was a trem offered, but I have never seen this design on any other guitar, ever.

Anyway, it was close to mint, and the guy was asking about $1500, which seems right around ballpark for such a rarity, though I wasn't that interested in it.

Was it a Gotoh? I think I saw one with that trem back in the '80s...

I played the one Larry LaLonde had when he was in Blind Illusion in '88. It was Jackson all the way.
Division - American Metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook.

The name on the trem was one I didn't recognize--I don't think it said Gotoh on it. In appearance, it looked sort of like a cross between an OFR and a Kahler 2700, but with features more like the OFR.

You could definitely see the Jackson influence at work in many of the guitar's details. The headstock was interesting--the Jackson design, but much larger. It was on the rack next to a KE3, and the Schon headstock was almost 50% bigger. Sort of goofy looking, to be honest. I don't normally judge guitars that much on their appearance, but I don't find the Schon design very appealing, otherwise I might have grabbed it just to try it out.

I own 2 of the Jackson Schon's the headstock is that way so there is straight pull from the nut to the tuners. Gotoh sounds right for the trem. The Schon play as good as any SD Jackson and are great guitars.

Re: I saw a Jackson Schon!

Gosh, I passed on a handful of Schons for next to nothing a few years back. I guess in hindsight I should have bought them all! Oh well. The trems look like the same ones used on some Aria guitars. The trems seemed kind of cheesy I thought. I remember Knut Koupee here in Mpls was a dealer for them back in the day, so I saw a few of them new.

That one on German eBay is EXACTLY like the one I saw, down to the trem and everything.

I was a little disturbed when I saw all of those uncompleted Schons on Ed Roman's site, but the little details on the one I saw in NYC clearly indicated that it was genuine. Between fake Richs, Steinbergers and Schons, that Ed has himself quite a deal, huh?
