3-m also makes a heavy clear plastic film that could protect it as well. You see the same product used in the automotive industry where they try to protect from rock chips.

Budman is your man, but he may need you to send the plate to take measurements, which you may not be willing to do. However, I will say he is one of the few guys I'd feel comfortable sending something like this to.
